I don’t know why Backlund has never received the chance to play with Johnny for any extended period of time.
He’s the best centre at carrying the puck on the roster.
He’s the best defensive forward on the team.
His shot is heavier than it looks.
Everyone, literally everyone, is better with him.
Colborne got paid off the back of his one Backlund season.
Sam Bennett nearly scored 20 goals, and has barely looked like
an NHL player since.
Tkachuk misses him like Hannibal misses Will Graham.
I’m starting to get the feeing that “Backlund isn’t a first line centre” is based entirely on him not being able to centre Iggy when he was 21.
Maybe time to change that thinking up.

The reason I'm uninterested in Backlund centering Johnny is that Backlund can't get quick shots off (as Monahan can). Backlund has a pretty hard wrister, but only gets it off in circumstances where he has time to position himself. We've seen Backlund surprise a few goalies either on the rush or just popping one in from the high slot, but both are possession-oriented rather than chance oriented. And I think Johnny makes chance-oriented passes, and Backlund just isn't that kind of finisher.
So to my eye, that's a really strange pairing. Should it be tried? Sure, why not. But the idea that it's obviously there for the taking... boy I dunno. I just don't see Backlund as that kind of player, and I think it would kill Johnny's offense and hurt Backlund's defense.

####...I love your gif game. That first one with the pot-smoking granny is insane.

It was really a good win by the Flames. After all the goals in the first period and the Flames up 3-2 after one, that game could have very easily gone either way and even completely sideways for the Flames but it didn't and they not only hung in there but came up with a win a and a big 2 points.
They showed Brad Treliving on the screen after the game and he looked not only relieved but happy for that win.
I like Brett Ritchie but I don't think he's a 1st line player. He's got stone hands and can't handle hard passes from Gaudreau and Monahan I've noticed the last couple games. Those guys can both play in tight areas and Ritchie needs to be able to feed them but he just freezes up and the play ends.
I would try Mangiapane or even Backlund on the 1st line. I think Backlund is probably the Flames most all around skilled player, put him on offense on the top line. I get they need him to shut down other teams top line but he's good for a lot of minutes.
I was happy to see Mark Giordano get the winner.
Good game and good win to get the points and close the gap in the standings.

Ritchie isn't there to make plays. He is there to dig pucks out and be a physical presence. Not many teama have 3 1st liners on a line together. If Johnny and Monahan played well they would make Ritchie stand out in a better way. He is not the problem on that line.
Mangi is a spark plug but he is small and weak on his skates. Would like to see how he would look there but I feel that he wouldn't work out.

Ritchie is OK at what he does - he doesn’t really dig pucks as opposed to knock guys off and then hopefully Monahan or sometimes Gaudreau is there too grab it. And he’s a RHS which theoretically helps on transition. But aside from that he’s no help at all - he has really quite awful hands at making or receiving passes, which needs to happen even if only a little.
I don’t need an elite first liner - a Ferland who can create room, shoot and skate would be great. If Lucic had medium speed, I’d put him there.
ETA: I’ve been wondering all season why they don’t try Dube. He’s not big but his wheels make him a good forechecker, and it’s not like there’s some supper chemistry between him, Lindholm and Tkachuk that needs to be preserved. He seems to play pretty well with any centre.

Lucic was solid. Only one assist but he was involved with plays all night. He seems to be tailor made for Sutter hockey.

It sure looked like he tipped the Giordano shot on the powerplay.

I don’t think he tipped it but he was a factor in the screen.

He pointed right to Gio after the goal, which to me is usually a player telling the shooter that they didn't get it and the shooter has the goal.

Yeah, I am aware of that, but players point to one another for all sorts of reasons. Either way it was extremely close.

They should award assists for a great screen. Considering some of the cheap second assists they hand out.

Nah, it hit Muzzin right in the butt.
Great screen though, and he was in front for Ryan's goal too.

I just wish he scored in the second to make it a two goal lead and didn't hit the post.
May have meant for a less "gripper" third to watch.

I stand corrected. My understanding of the rule was way off. I was under the impression that it was launching a player into the boards from over 2 feet away. I was way off.

It should be. But it isn’t because the rule is basically “whatever the ref wants”.
