It's impossible to love Sutter any more than I do.
He is 10000% referring to Gaudreau-Monahan-Ritchie, who were by far the worst line tonight.
Sutter doesn't care who you are. You play the right way or you don't play at all.
Johnny and Mony are going to improve so much under Sutter. That, or they're going to be saying their goodbyes this summer.
|
Johnny and Mony's 5 on 5 play will be the key to this whole thing.
Tonight Bennett's line was enough, but its unlikely they'll play heroes two nights in a row.
If that pair who are our closest thing to 'game breakers' can't get it done in these 29 games under Sutter then I think one is gone this summer.

I guess??? Like he didn't really do much. He's lucky Lucic just grazed him with that nuke of a right hand. It looked like lucic was going to end it there on the break up which would have been smart of Anderson. Anderson his Alexander Semin impersonation ( ( I chuckled at that) then Lucic feed 3 solid ones square to the cheek.

Honestly, I'd be happy with either outcome so long as it finally puts to rest some long-standing questions about this core and their coachability.
I can kind of forgive the players for not being at their best when there's a goofball like Gulutzan or Ward calling the shots. When you get a coach like Sutter and your top players aren't willing to buy in, you tell them not to let the door hit them on the way out.

But he was in the right places, got a few decent chances and tied his career high total of 4 hits I one game. Monahan will be fine.
I posted earlier, I'm more concerned with Gaudreau.

I agree also. I don't think Gaudreau is well suited for Sutter hockey. He looked lost out there and unsure of what to do. Gotta up his game big time or he might be taken off the first line.

Darryl Sutter press conferences..
Anyone notice Darren Haynes' question? He made sure to specifically ask about the "Bennett - Ryan - Leivo" line, rather than asking about the 4th line.
This man has done his homework.

He might not be a prototypical lunchpail guy but he's no worse-suited than Huselius or Gaborik were, and those guys had success under Darryl.

That game was well worth the time invested, a refreshing change and a great debut for Sutter's Flames.

He never should have taken this long to put the right coach in. It was a lot of wasted effort over the long haul! This will be a turning point for Brad in terms of raising the bar. Doubt he ever goes back to an unproven coach when he sees what it actually takes to win!
This organization can learn a lot from Darryl and bring in the right types of players going forward.
Great game great result! Nice to see the grinders getting rewarded!

Gaudreau was out there for the shift that lead to the Montreal penalty and he was out on the PP in the final two minutes of the game...I think some of you are drawing the wrong conclusions. Gaudreau just came off the ice before Leivo and then went out there.

Hmm I dunno. I thought he started the year well but lately has gotten a bit soft.
When sutter is saying people need to finish checks he’s talking about the Monahan Gaudreau line who have gone years thinking they’re above it. Guess what? They aren’t. I get your smaller and maybe a little intimidated but get it together, get some courage and do it. Monahan especially, and he also started the year with that chip on his shoulder but has softened. It isn’t acceptable and won’t fly with Sutter which is good because in turn it’ll generate turnovers and from that- offence and confidence and scoring.

Then when talking about the lines out in the last minute, says they as a team need to get better at the checking required in the division without singling anyone out, but still pushing to get better. So without diminishing the win, or making a big statement about being unhappy, he's let it be known that the there is another level to push for and he's going to push for that. That's how you win championships.
|
Couldn't agree more.
I remember Ward's post-game comments after Rittich absolutely stole 3 points in the 2 game Toronto set a couple weeks back and just praising the Flames' play despite them getting absolutely dominated in every which way possible.
Sutter after those very same two games would've been fuming and ripping the team apart post-game.
Sutter demands the best of the best out of every single player. He doesn't get blinded by wins they don't deserve. Hell, he's not even happy after a game like tonight in which the Flames dominated across the board for the most part. Tonight was phenomenal hockey in most aspects, but he knows the players (and a specific line in general) can still (and need to) be better.
The Flames not hired the best coach they possibly could have, they brought back a Flames icon who just immediately became the most valuable asset on the team.

I thought the question was the empty net shift, and which line they chose for that.

What impressed me was Sutter all over the guys after the MTL goal. Not allowing them to sulk and revert to timid shrews. That's the difference right there between a great coach and a just okay coach. That's it, that's all. That is all a coach needs to do. Pull their heads out their arses moment to moment.
Honestly, the next test now is to keep these players doing this for 29+ more games. They need to keep this going. Afterall, that's THE problem.
|
Thank god that TV timeout happened there. After the second shift after the goal against, the Flames looked like they were ready to collapse. I was curious if he would actually call a timeout. Because they needed to settle down. Sutter got through after that and they returned to the usually play.
Great game. Aggressive play, supporting each other and being accountable. Do it again please.

Bennett's line was fantastic
Backlund's line was great
Lindholm's line was good
Monahan's line was alright (which is an improvement on what they were)
