Game 4 I think too.
So close to going up 3-1 in the series (mostly due to good goaltending).
Until you play Lindholm, Backlund, and Reider for 2 minutes and 15 seconds to end the period even though you had a chance to change.
He still does the same thing where he will throw out his three best defensive forwards with about 2 1/2 minutes left to end the game and just hope they can somehow make it through that time.

Yep. He must be stressing pretty hard and it's all his own doing. Sucks for the players on the team that still give a Damn. I watched a minute of the game after it was 5-1 and Tanev was still blocking shots. Him and Mangiapane are now my favorite flames.

It's actually impressive how in three coaching hires in a row, he's got them all wrong during a period when his core was young and had favourable contracts, but he missed the window completely by not giving enough of a priority to the coaching staff's ability to get the best out of the players on a consistent basis. He likely hired coaches that aren't highly acclaimed to avoid the power struggle possibility, but it will still ultimately be his demise.

Ward has done nothing but make excuses for himself since he took over. Nothing he says post-game now is surprising.

And still not tell them to clear the front of the net! Or kill time in the corner.

Doesn’t every team in the nhl have to do the same though ? Flames at least got the worst team in the division for the 5th game. If they can’t do any better than this effort against Ottawa on tight schedule, then they might as well forfeit the 5th game and get some rest.

You would hope NHL players could figure that out...do they need an earpiece so Ward can tell them everything they need to do

Thing is, Ward is the guy the players wanted. And they aren’t playing hard for him. That’s on both.

Why is it always one or the other? I haven't absolved the players of anything.
I asked you a simple question. What is Ward doing well with this team?

Lucic actually tries hard and scored a goal but he cost two
I think its time to scratch him until he retires

By that logic they're not playing hard for anyone. Bring a Boudreau in and these players will cry.

I hate Hartley but it’s tempting. I’d be happy enough with Sutter.

I think most people really underestimate the value of coaching. Strong coaching is strong leadership, keying players in to the things they are doing or not doing, and motivating and building belief in that feedback they are providing. It absolutely makes a difference, when it's been demonstrated that mistakes mean benching (and frankly, they should. They sure did when I played), so yah players will follow direction and not fall back on to instinct. These guys have had systems drilled into them their whole life, they've adjusted their play their whole life, if this is not working it's because of what the coach is telling them. You can't have 23 guys go rogue and do what they think is right, or you're gonna get beer league levels of play making. A good coach will turn this group around

Do we know that’s true for sure?
Media around the team all said “The guys love Wardo” but those guys were Ward cheerleaders from the day the season ended. And can’t really ever recall a player (outside of Lucic) explicitly praising Ward or the system they are playing.
Honestly this team never has played well under him. Even when they were winning down the stretch last year it was on the back of Talbot’s strong play but the underlying numbers had cratered.
I question that these guys have ever been on board with the system and style of play that Ward has been preaching.
