What a stinking pile of excrement of a game.

Not a great start for the new coach.

Grossman is terrible, I am still blown away he was offered a contract let alone dressed..
Kulak, Kevin and Wotherspoon - all better options.

Brodie and Gio should be stapled to McDavid next game.

Elliott was atrocious but he's been elite for five years - I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Monahan and Gaudreau look like guys who missed training camp. Versteeg looked like he got here yesterday.

Backlund, Frolik and Brouwer all had really good games.

Grossman can GTFO to Stockton, and I expect he won't be here passed November.

The penalty shot call was garbage.

That said, 41 SOG compared to 28, beat the Oilers 60-40 in the dot. When things are a little more cohesive, I think there'll be a reason to avoid the suicide booth.

I don't understand the hate for Grossmann. He played fine and he wasn't there only one making mistakes. We outplayed them for pretty much the whole game and came up short. Add in any other dmen, give us Crosby or Ovechkin, bring in Scotty Bowman, that won't help bad officiating and especially a goalie with a save percentage under .800. We had tons of chances and scored 4 goals. Most times than not 4 goals wins games.

Just and ugly game, Flames never settled down. But there was some good but unfortunately it didn't come from our top players. Losing sucks but it is just one game. Time to get to work.
I trust Johnny Gaudreau a hell of a lot more to make that difficult play than Nik Grossman, a stay at home dman who is known for his physical play and defence. The right play there is to put the puck on net and hope for a rebound, especially when you know your pinching in and your first mistake resulted in a goal. Keep it simple and play your game.

Gulutzan is a ####ing moron:

1) Why the #### are you line matching McDavid's line with Monahan's line? Isn't the ####ing point of having Backlund-Frolik to shut down opposing top lines?

2) A kid can tell you how ####ed up the defense pairings were tonight. what a joke.

3) Elliott had a terrible game.

Summary:

Gulutzan is a ####ing dumbass. I had such high hopes but he just seems like a low IQ moron.

Ice Time:

1) Brodie
2) Wideman
3) Giordano
4) Hamilton

Is this what this ####ing coach is being paid to do? this is bush league coaching.

/end rant.

I understand that general idea off faceoffs...but even off the fly...it was obvious that Gulutzan wanted Monahan's line out there vs McDavids.

So no its not just the home team that has the luxury of "line matching" for the entire game....the road team can make adjustments on the fly....its just that Gulutzan wanted Line 1 vs Line 1 and it backfired immensely.....thus Gaudreau with a -3 rating.

It'll be interesting to see how he chooses to match lines at home.

1st period was a big black hole of suck. After that I thought the Flames played better as the game wore on. The difference was goaltending, terrible officiating, bad luck, and two massive brain farts by Grossman. Elliott had a rough night, but I have a feeling tonight was an anomaly. I think he'll be better next game, as will the rest of the team. It's only the first game and there's no reason to jump off a bridge just yet.

But yea, losing to Edmonton is unacceptable.

Four goals for should be enough to win in this league. Clearly defensively this game was awful and that caused the loss. That's where the team needs to tighten up pronto.

Very true.

What I don't understand about people being upset that JH and Monahan are matching against another teams first line. It baffels me that people are pissed they are. All I see consistently here and during the World cup is JH is better than Mcdavid.

If they really believe this too be true why are they complaining about the too line out there vs Edmontons top line?

Wasent Monahan 67% on fce offs tonight? What the #### is the worry ? You either beleive the Flames first line is better then Edmontonsr you don't. Gulutzan IMO was right to match Monahan and Johnny Hockey vs McDavids line.
The problem was Versteeg is not the right man on that line.He is not a sutible 3rd man to make that line effective.

I do miss Hartley for how he had a nearly fool proof game plan to solve the Oilers.

Though we also lost in embarrassing fashion early last october to the Oil at the hands of McGiggles, and we know how things evolved between the teams after that, so have to just take it for what it is, a very clunky game 1.

Not happy but in a couple days and with better performance it'll be in the rear view mirror.

Was really disappointed by the decisions made by the coaching staff. The defense pairings and decision to dress your two slowest defense men, and least capable defenseman, against a team that relies on its speed to generate anything was disappointing to say the least. Just another season where the pre-season was not used to get the team ready to come out of the gate. The whole team look unprepared to play. Gulutzan has some serious work to do to prove he's a NHL head coach. Poor decisions and lack of preparation are. Ot a good way to start.

The Flames played rather well throughout the contest all things considered. This is their first game together, and as we saw last year when you have new people, it does take a few games to get the chemistry going.

I thought the defense pairings were a complete mess. It is a decent idea to try Brodie on a different pair under normal circumstances, but he does not play well on the left side and that's been true each time he's played there in past seasons. The pairings need to be Gio-Brodie, Joki/Kulak-Hamilton, Engelland/Grossman-Wideman/Kulak.

With how they possessed the puck for most of the game, they should be able to win most of the games like that.

I saw a different game, I thought Versteeg played fairly well and Monahan well, not so much.
