Just as an aside. By not claiming Parenteau and signing Versteeg the Flames save $300K. Versteeg is 3 years younger, FWIW.

what a weird day (ugh, grossman signed?!)..... Let's see. He's proven to have the ability to put points up at 2nd line levels in the past. Could be a decent option on the top line, or frankly on any line, where the wings are a bit weak (especially the right side).

I was actually excited to see Ferland get an opportunity in such a big year for him with gaudreau/monahan, but this is likely a lower risk option, so am ok with it.

For those debating versteeg/ferland, just make a pube bet on which gets more points by year's end and let's move on.

I actually don't mind this at all, he should make a great one year fill-in at RW. Even if he's not as good as he was when he was younger, he should still have at least some offensive finish alongside Gaudreau and Monahan, whereas nobody else showed any ability to take that role in camp, mind you none of them had Gaudreau setting them up. I still feel alright about this signing. Hope the character issues thing isn't a problem though.

Where's that oiler fan who was penciling in Versteeg's last seasons stats, to help soften the loss of Hall?

Doesn't Versteeg have a really good shootout percentage as well? Could step in as Joe Colborne replacement in that department.

I'm not saying Ferland is a better option, just that he provides something valuable that line to counter-act his cement hands. Gaudreau has his wrists slashed pretty much every game, and Im not crazy about only leaving it to the refs to handle. Deterrence might not be effective as it used to be, but Ferland has a little bit of crazy to him that I think would help.

To be honest, I'm not sold on any of the RW options for the first line (these two and Chiasson) but I'll guess we'll have to see how things go. Chances are, all of them get a shot there.

Does anyone know if Versteeg is good to go? Wasn't he dinged up a little?

IIRC he was skating at yesterday's Oilers practice, but given the Oilers' doctors who knows.

says opportunity was why he choose Flames over Oilers.

^ The Oilers have the worst RW depth in the league. He would've easily slotted in on their first line there.

That's still a worse opportunity than the alternative, though, because LOL Oilers!

Haha, seriously, these last 24 hours have been awesome!

Prediction --- Gaudreau + Monahan + Versteeg = 90 goals this season

This is pure awesome.

I like the addition of Kris Versteeg to the top line, best option we have. The fact that his signing disrupts the Oilers depth chart? Exxxxcellent

He's not wrong. Compare Chia's 24 hours with Treliving's.

What on earth are you talking about?

Eberle and Draisaitl are both better than Versteeg.

I think the Oilers have better RW depth than us.

Maybe this is payback for Russel. haha.

I think it's a good gamble for Calgary. Versteeg will probably be their best right winger.

Seems like the Oilers would rather play Draisaitl on the wing in their top six and want to give Puljujaarvi more chances than I would to make the team.

I'd have rather had Versteeg on the 3rd line than the Fin.

Why is Draisaitl even playing RW?

man, you really thought that with Chiarelli/Mclellen they'd do things differently. You would think with the precedent of failure in similar regards, they would almost too cautious to make the same mistakes.

yet, here we are.
Lucic McDavid Eberle
Pouliot Rnh Draisaitl
Maroon Caggiula PoolParty
Pitlick Letestu Kassian

that 3rd line, putting a rookie center with your rookie 1st round pick that didn't really push for a spot in camp apparently. Concept of trying to "hide" your rookies in the lineup, as they adjust in the NHL just doesn't exist in Edmonton, they see no value. yet have hindered the growth of every one of their top picks not named mcdavid.
