Hopefully they lower him into the arena on a tether from a helicopter complete with fireworks, smoke machine and light show.

And have the Air Force do a flyby in jets while Metallica play 'Enter Sandman' that they'll have officially changed the name to 'Enter McDavid.'

Locke, Inglewood, and Jay just won the thread. Possibly the Internet.

Sorry if I missed it, but is there an approximate time table that they think he will be back? All I can find is that he is out indefinitely with "months" being the qualifier. Is there any more specific information out there?

So how does this work in terms of how many years the Oilers can keep McDavid? If he misses a big chunk of time, does this year not count towards his 7 year UFA eligibility?

So lets say he's ready in 2 months, but if he's out 3 months, this year doesn't count. I wouldn't put it past the Oilers to keep him out an extra month for "precautionary reasons" in order to gain an extra year of McDavid as an RFA. Especially when they're probably out of any sort of realistic chance at the playoffs by the end of November.

It's two to three months. My guess is around the middle of January. They may hold him back until after the all-star game given that the Oilers have a fairly long break.

Can't remember where I read it, but YES his time on the shelf counts towards RFA. He is still on the roster even if he's not playing games. They placed him on LTIR. As long as he's on the roster for 40 games, it will count (which he will be, basically no matter what).

If I was management Id send him back down like the Flames did with Bennett. It would be the sensible thing to do, by then everyone is 2 months ahead in terms of game action, he's returning from a significant surgery, it would allow him to be part of the Calder trophy race next year and it wouldn't be him in a high risk situation to reinjure himself.

But this is Edmonton we are talking about, just ask Smid, if they could they would be sending him out next game.

He's too good for the OHL. It would be a waste of time.

They could send him to the AHL on a conditioning stint if they feel he needs games to get back up to speed, though.

Yeah but he'll never be quite the same, you know?

Its like when your toy breaks, sure, your dad fixes it as best he can but its just never quite the same. Its just like when Hall got hurt the first time, some of the veneer came off? And then RNH's shoulder surgery, and then Yakupov...well he just wasnt very good to begin with.

Its a shame.

If McDavid wasn't already one of the better players in the NHL this might make sense.

But he's already on an AHL team.

How would you sell that to McDavid though? He was the Oilers best player before the injury. What kind of message would that send to him? I'm sure he'd hold resentment towards the organization for delaying his NHL career when going down to junior is only going to stall his development. He's not going to learn anything more playing in junior.
