The internet has completely fragmented the public into a million different pieces. In the old days we all got our music from just a few sources.
Yeah, I find these lists pretty much meaningless now and reading too many of these lists aggravate me. Like, how can you say the deep house track from Mr. Fingers is better or worse than the garagey art-punk track from Parquet Courts? The two tracks cannot be any more different so trying to say one outranks another is just nonsense. I would rather they make five different top-20 lists that attempts to filter out the different genres than just have one large nonsensical list. But I admit I will get suckered into reading these lists to see if some of my favorites from the past year made the list -- for example, happy to see Jessy Lanza get some love from Pitchfork. But on the other hand, disappointed that some of my favorite tracks from this year like "Drunk Driver/Killer Whales" (track of the year for me personally), "Under the Sun", "These Words", "Easier Said", "Casual Party" or "Tiny" did not make the list.
Another problem with these lists is that they really just capture a snapshot in time. I sometimes don't discover a favorite song or realize a track that had heretofore been underestimated by my ears and brain is actually a great song until years later.
Life of Pablo has got a good chance to go down as one of the very most overrated albums of all time. Especially since it's now clear Kanye's much closer to mentally unstable than musical genius. Just not a very good album, but since it's Kanye...

I haven't purchased a new Nick Cave album in years, but I may have to get that one. Has anyone heard it?
Great album. Makes my top 5 for the year even though it is not as good as their previous effort, the amazing Push the Sky Away.
You can definitely tell Cave is going through massive grief from losing his son. It is a very sad, dark and depressing album (even for Cave) and the lyrics regularly sound like he is about to break out in tears. It is also quite minimalist and almost seems like a modern version of The Boatman's Call.

Based on viewing a few of those albums rankings, Kanye and Bon Iver are fighting it out for most overrated album of the year.
Is it just me becoming a grumpy old man or has 2016 been sub-par for music? Normally I can easily come up with a top 10 list but this year it is tough to come up with 5.

This one is pretty good too. I might have put it 6th.
2017 already looks like a much better year for music with Japandriods, Dropkick Murphys, The Shins, Cloud Nothings, The Flaming Lips, The Smith Street Band, and The Menzingers all releasing new albums.

Yeah, I will pick up the new Japandriods in January and Strand of Oaks in February. Had similar hopes for James Blake and Bon Iver this year. Also one I forgot to mention from this year Diarrhea Planet like the Cloud Nothings of 2016.

I can play this game. The Gotobeds are like the Parquet Courts of 2016.

Easily one of my favorite albums of the last decade. It's brilliant.
