Truth be told, I just like Lehner more mainly because he's an In Flames fan and his mask is my favorite from last year. And he's got massive upside for a goaltender. That helps.
Lehner is of higher pedigree, younger and will likely be had for less. I would much prefer they go after him as there's more upside but still it's unknown if he's at least in the short term going to be better than Hiller.

That's the gamble. But I bet it pays off because either Ortio or Lehner are going to grab the reins and run with it. Hiller would provide a more stable veteran presence back there but I get the feeling Treliving and company don't want that right now. Lehner's contract is perfect. If he busts hard in two years it's no skin off their back.

or you ask to talk to Talbot to play hardball with Ottawa (Lehner). The teams that are trading goalies want so much, but they are not going to necessarily get it with so many goalies actually available.

Agreed. Seems like it should be a buyers market, but whoever gets the perceived "best one available" is going to overpay.
Feels to me that the ranking of the available guys would be.
1. Talbot
2. Lehner
3. Lack
4. Hiller

Then you have the free agents: Dubnyk (bet he signs in Minny), Niemi, Ramo, etc.

And the domino effect - if Dallas gets one of the above - they will want to move Lehtonen.

I don't think the Flames can get much for Hiller due to the floor of tenders available but that also means that if they feel they need a new guy, they should be able to get one for a less than prohibitive price.

Right now my first choice would be to sign Dubnyk as a UFA and then trade Hiller. Of course, that has to be a two way street I guess.

Heh, who knows? Maybe they deal for Talbot and he come to CGY and becomes our stud #1 goalie for 8+ years.

Can I just say I love coming in here to talk puck. Trades, UFAs, & draft are such fun to speculate on and come up with different scenarios. Sharing it all here is pretty cool.

I'd rather just resign Ramo than pay that price. Seems like the price is based more on potential than on the kind of goalie Talbot actually is. Like paying for a house with the money from a gamble you haven't won yet.

Bruce Garrioch @SunGarrioch
#Sen hope to complete a deal for G Robin Lehner. As I wrote today, Sabres are frontrunners while Flames, Oilers and Sharks trying as well.

Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch 3m3 minutes ago #Sens are closing in on a deal for Lehner with the Sabres. Expect a No. 1 pick to be part of the trade and perhaps David Legwand.

1st rounder seems steep. Part of a bigger deal?

Very steep. Maybe a 2nd & 3rd. I don't think he has proven himself to that level.

Jeez, with these prices I would rather trade a 2nd for Legend of Lack rather than a 1st for Lehner or 2 2nds/1st for Talbot.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
With Lehner to Buffalo, things heat up on Talbot. Oilers and Sharks still keen. Calgary also revisiting Talbot trade this morning.

For other teams the price tag on Lack might be a 2nd. For the Flames it likely takes a 1st, or the 52nd+53rd.

At the kinds of prices being thrown around I hope the Flames just keep their picks and sign one of the free agents. If Ramo is asking for the moon maybe take a flyer on Niemi.

Niemi is better than Ramo anyhow, or at least more consistent.

Put me in the camp that still doesn't understand why the Flames seem to want to acquire a goalie.

I hope the Flames are just driving up the price for the oilers so they over pay and then the sharks target Hiller.

Well I'd assume its because they have no faith in Hiller... which is understandable.

Surely this isn't going to happen is it? We're not going to burn picks in this draft on Talbot are we?

Just sign Dubnyk and roll with Duybnk/Ortio next season. You save the picks/players you're going to give up.
