I hear ya... It's honestly painful to listen to. After all these years, how they still have a ton of fans that continue to buy into the hype just blows my mind.

Remember when we were 3-0-2 five games into the season this time last year? Except we were actually outplaying the opposition and putting up good offensive numbers. And I thought there was reason to be optimistic about the season then.. This start definitely doesn't seem as promising, despite being above 500. Unless we think the goaltenders can save us on more nights than not. I suppose that's the one big difference from last season to now.

I am not sure if I understand what you're getting at. By all accounts, we're pegged to be a bottom five team this season. Reading this post (and a select few others in this thread) it's like there are a hand full of people who seem like that's news to them. We were badly outplayed by Chicago, because they're one of the best teams in the league, and we're one of the bottom teams. Like last year, our effort and compete level will keep us in a lot of games, but it's very likely we're going to end up one of the bottom teams in points.

Meh - still feeling the glow! Jumped out of my chair on Backs' winner - how can one not be happy with that?
Stealing a game is always good and something to enjoy. Give the boys credit for digging themselves out of their own (penalty) issues, working hard, not caving and Hiller for a fantastic game.
Finding negatives in ugly wins is for coaches. Thank goodness there are none of those here.

So is Hiller our version of Seabiscuit? I didn't think he looked good at all before but maybe it's because he wasn't playing a good enough team... Maybe he raises his game to the level of competition he's against. I thought he played amazing last night and didn't honestly think he had it in him. Great job!
So if Hiller is our Sea Biscuit, does that make Scrivens the oilers urinal cake?

I know the Flames were tired last night. But between Sat's game and last night, I am now flagging team speed as an area of concern.
Not going to go ahead and say it is a problem yet. But I will be watching that area closely over the next 6 games or so.
I know Burke and Trieliving are big on size and the Flames are looking improved in that area. But last night, even when they were trying to keep up, it looked like they were standing still compared to the Hawks. Any rebuild must also focus on improving team speed, or it will be stillborn.
Again, could be they were tired in addition to being just plain out-skilled. We'll have to see.

I think there are plenty of guys on the team who have wheels, they just aren't getting the chance to use them. Teams like the Blackhawks and Blues are elite-level teams and they break out of their zone about as well as you can do it. That allows them to build speed through the neutral zone.
In comparison, when you watch the Flames break out of their own zone and go on the rush it's often sloppy which takes away the opportunity for speed. Now they have to pass around and look for an opening or dump the puck and fight the defence on the forecheck.
The Flames are by no means the fastest team in the league but I think the lack of skill is taking away their opportunity to use their speed.

Yeah...due to life I had the game PVR'd but the wife turned on the TV when OT was about a minute old and wouldn't change it....scared the dog with my excitement.
Probably will just roll with that memory and delete the game lol.

Never know what toll this flu is having on the team right now as well.....

Speed is one area I'd like to see Gaudreau work on. He can add some strength to his legs without having to gain crazy mass which is hard for somebody with his body type. That could really help

I didn't really know where else to put this:
Marc Antoine Godin@MAGodin10m10 minutes ago
Caught up w/ Mike Cammalleri. Grateful to Bob Hartley for helping him become more rounded. His defensive game now a fit with DeBoer's Devils

Is this not the place where everyone can give their honest assessments of the team and the game they played? Just because the blackhawks are leagues ahead of the flames doesn't mean you can't discuss...what actually happened during the game. Isn't that what we're here for? Sorry for being a Debbie downer but I'm just being real with what I see. You can take it or leave it but I don't see the point of trying to chastise people talking about a game in the post game thread

not a good game by the flames outside of hiller by any means, but no reason to complain when they manage to come out with the 2 points.
That being said, other than the game versus the preds, i find that the flames are a anti-puck-possession team. The basically have the puck on their stick for maybe a few minutes maximum in the offensive zone in the whole game. The spend most of the time defending, or chasing the puck.
other than Backlund, who's line eats up most of those few mins of offensive zone time a game, our other centers (colborne and monahan) just haven't had much as far as creating offensive zone time. Naturally, it's not just them, their wingers haven't been impactful in this area either.
i wouldn't mind seeing stajan given a more prominent role as i think given the right wingers he may be able to provide a more offensive boost to to the team and his linemates.
This likely boils down to the forwards just lacking enough skill/talent to generate consistent offensive chances, but that wasn't an issue last year.
as far as the d goes, have been pretty satisfied. Other than wideman of course. the guy is an absolute disaster. he started last season off so well, but since coming back from injury and then to start this year, he's been dog crap.

Good for Cammy but it seemed at times that he hated having to commit to that 200 foot game here. I wish him all the best in Jersey but I am kinda glad the final piece that needed to go from that era of Flames has moved on.
Happy to see Cammy off to a hot start though, never hated him as a person/player for the Flames just was frustrated at times with him. I think he will do damage in that division.

One thing is for sure; if this were a few years ago we'd have lost at least one of these back to back games and most likely would have lost both. And they would have been against basement dweller teams like the Jackets or the Oilers. I am enjoying the start of this season. Lots to be excited about right now.
