I just got back from vacation and had access to local Miami TV (NBC, CBS, etc). They were reporting daily on Sochi / Russian anti-gay policies and never missed an opportunity to paint a foreign culture as ass backwards to the South Florida TV audiences. There was however, absolutely zero mention of this legislation (which is happening only a few states over from FL) in any of their stories. So American.

This exactly illustrates my concerns about raising the rainbow flag for the Olympics (which appeared outside of the normal process and duration of the typical city process)

I would think you would have to grant a permit for the Ukrainian flag at city hall, to also raise awareness and show solidarity.

If they do it great, but it ends up to someone having to make a decision on what 'situation' qualifies, which I think will end up causing problems.

Hey everyone remember the big deal that got made about those "Canada United" stickers on cabs so many years ago?

The media latched onto that and it was the biggest deal, now all these years later some cabs in the city still have them on and it isn't even mentioned.

That's how I feel about this whole city hall flag thing. It's "slightly" all the rage for the media to run with. Give it a few months or a year and it is a non-issue again.

Don't you live in Airdrie?

EDIT: Perhaps I didn't pick my spot very well here for the point I'm trying to make, but I've started, so I may as well finish to where I was going.

It's not that you might not have a point on this particular issue Rayne, what prompted me to post is that this is the latest in a trend I see.

What irks me is when people move just outside the city and then continue to voice their opinion, typically negative, of events, trends, development, ideas, etc. going on in Calgary and especially those either originating from or having something to do with the City of Calgary (as in the municipal government/corporation).

Now, there are two qualities that are frequently parts of this phenomenon that make it irksome:

1. A common theme with people that live in the towns/municipalities/cities of Airdrie, Okotoks, Chestermere, Cochrane, Langdon, High River, Irricana, Strathmore, etc. is that, while they still work and/or frequently shop or visit it, they left Calgary because it was too [something]. Getting too big, too ethnic, too noisy, too much, too crowded, too crazy, etc. They either left or never settled in Calgary because they weighed the objective, logical choice of living close to where you work and spend a great deal of time versus all these other factors. It's very typically a "take your ball and go somewhere else" situation (well, except the part about having your livelihood depend on Calgary and spending your working days and a good deal of non-working time in the city). There's a good dose of spite and animosity involved in the act.

2. These people very typically take much less interest in the politics, development, events, etc. going on in the locale they've chosen to live in than they do in Calgary affairs. How many people in Airdrie can name their mayor and/or councilor but could do so for Calgary when they don't even live there? How many people in Cochrane care more about a lane of Crowchild Trail having to be shut down for construction than things happening in Cochrane?

Of course I must give the disclaimer that either of these two qualities can't be attached to everyone who lives within a half hour's drive of the city limits. I think though that many would agree that these aren't uncommon.

It's not that these people's opinions don't count in many cases, but I do think that in some cases they should count less or perhaps be discounted, particularly when it comes to municipal government decisions.

Other than that, I don't really know what else I mean to say other than bringing notice to it. What I'd honestly like to see is these people put more effort into working to improve the communities where they live. Own up to the decision you made to live somewhere and do what you can to make it a better place to live.

Rayne, I don't know your particular reasons for living or not living somewhere or if you're necessarily part of this trend. I'm using your post mostly as a launch to speak to a larger group and some generalities. I think that the specific issues you're speaking to in this thread - about process, etc. do deserve discussion and thought. I do wonder though if you know or care as much about what's happening at Airdrie city hall.

New policy - Flying special flags at parliament or city hall can ONLY be protests against something stupid Russia has done.

lol - do I have to stop cheering for the Flames as well?

Perspective is a funny thing, as a (until recently) life long Calgarian I've never put much thought into the whole urban/suburban/satellite community debate. Doesn't strike a chord with me. I've read the threads when people make very logical arguments on both sides, but just don't have an opinion one way or the other.

I still identify as a Calgarian, perhaps because I'm downtown everyday. Never entered my mind that someone would actually call out an opinion of mine because of where I live.

At any rate, your tangent would be interesting to discuss in a different topic should you wish.

Can't today though, need to leave early to beat traffic.

Woah now, we all know your commute since moving to Airdrie has probably decreased by at least 20 minutes.
