It was people criticizing Feaster who brought up Sutter. And you can't fairly appraise Feaster without understanding how much of a mess Sutter left behind. I don't think anyone could have turned that ship around in 2-3 seasons. But as I said, this season is the real beginning of the post-Sutter era.

Sorry, but the season we just had was the first season that we could start to judge Feaster. He brought in his coach of choice, he misread the veteran team, and he spent close to $10 million on 2 players, just to try and keep them close to 8th place. He was not in cap jail and he failed miserably.

This was pretty much Feasters team going into this year. Other than Iggy and Stajan in the forward group, Feaster re-signed, traded for, or picked up on UFA, the other forwards. On D, JBO, GIo, and Brodie where the 3 left from Sutter and they were probably the 3 best players on the team. The other 3-5 D men were all from Feaster one way or another.

So, it took Feaster 3 seasons (2 of his own and 1 as AGM) to figure out that Sutter left a "mess"? Then he is an idiot. As Moon or kyuss said above, either he is spineless and holding on to the last GM job he'll ever have for dear life (the owners/KK dictating scenario) or he is a moron (as a hockey manager). Either way, not someone you want as GM...

Yeah, he should have fixed everything in his first year. Get rid of this loser.

Can we just agree that Feaster pretty much sucks, and that Sutter was probably just as bad in his last couple seasons?

I can't agree.

This team was well on the decline before Feaster took over. I'm not sold on Feaster by any means, but I think every realist knew that things had to get worse before they would get better regardless of who the GM is.

Time will tell, but the expectations people have for instant gratification are not realistic.

Feaster's worst moves were one's that never panned out. The Richards offer and/or the O'Reilly offer sheet could have set the organization back another 2-3 years. He's damn lucky Glenn Sather and Greg Sherman are bad managers as well, or else we'd be stuck with those two (or possibly only Richards), and not have our first/third rounder this year.

True enough on those points, and that is why I am not sold on Feaster. I haven't completely run out of patience yet, although I was pretty livid at the O'Reilly offer at the time - even before the waivers issue came out. I can't help but think that was ownership budding in again though.

Why does everyone forget about the almost Ryan Smyth scare?

It's like suppressing something horrible. We'd probably remember it in a Hypnotherapy session.

Because Feaster never had any intention of acquiring Ryan Smyth. He talked to Lombardi about the possibility if they were unable to get Tanguay extended, then got Tanguay extended the next day.

The Kings were much more interested in trying to get the Flames involved on Smyth than the Flames ever were.

What I find strange is people saying how bad Feaster is but how great Weisbrod is but they don't know how much of a factor Weisbrod was in any of the bad moves the Flames have made over the last couple of years.

The one major thing I won't forgive Sutter for was wasting two prime seasons of Iggy and Kipper - with a decent supporting cast - on Mike Keenan. We played an almost incomprehensibly backwards system those years.

I remain confident in our drafting under Feaster. Nothing else he has done has been confidence inspiring, but I'm ok with that as the most important thing right now is drafting.

Agreed I am not really sold on Feaster. While Sutter made some questionable signings near the end of his time here he could still pull trades out of a hat, something Feaster seems unable to do. If Sutter had coached I have no doubt we would have seen a different Bouwmeester, and guys like Rene Bourque would have been stapled to bench.

Makes sense except for the fire feaster part, that won't happen this summer. Makes more sense to wait and do a full house cleaning after 13/14. Coaches, scouts, etc.
If the decision has already been made to sack Feaster, do it now and not after next season. Can't afford another lame duck season. Bring the new regime in (or give the existing one a fair chance). Need some consistency/stability in the rebuild as switching the blueprint midway through isn't going to get us further ahead of where we are.

Should this section have been in green text because if anyone had used that line in defence of Feaster they would have been tarred and feathered by those that want to see Feaster gone.

It's amazing how it was okay for Sutter to have a few players that 'didn't pan out' but Feaster has Cervenka and he is the worst GM on the planet who has no business being in hockey.

Not defending Keenan too much, but to be fair, if that 2009 team wasn't decimated by injuries at the start of the playoffs, that probably would have been the only year they would have advanced past the first round since '04.

I don't see why anyone can really support Feaster as GM. I like the man and I believe there's a place for him in hockey management but I think he's in over his head as NHL GM. He inherited most of the pieces in Tampa's cup winning team and drove the team into the ground after with poor drafting, poor contracts, and inability to find a starting goaltender after letting Khabibulin walk.

As far as the Flames goes he has let the scouts factor heavily in the picks and has set up more of an organizational management team rather than one guy making all the decisions like Sutter. That's all good and all but you only have to look at the ridiculous contract offer to Richards to see he never learned his lesson from the original Richards and Lecavalier deals in Tampa that handcuffed that franchise. The ROR fiasco was one of the more embarrassing episodes in the history of the franchise. He hand picked the godfather of his son to coach (who's been out of the NHL for years) rather than conduct an extensive search which IMO simply not how you conduct business in any professional sport. The team itself is a mess and there is no doubt Feaster inherited the mess but things have got progressively worse to the point the team was flirting with picking top 5 for the first time in franchise history.

I just see him vastly inferior to guys like Shero, Chiarelli, Holland, Lombardi, Wilson, Bowman, Poil, etc and it's hard to envision the Flames ever leapfrogging those organizations when the guy at the top can't hold a candle to the guys running the top teams. The Flames need to get better top to bottom and that's from the President down and if Shanahan is the new president then hopefully the next change is GM followed by coach because the present GM and coach are both on their last NHL gigs in their career for a reason which is because the rest of the league has deemed them not up to the task.

It's also important to note that Keenan could only dress 16 players due to cap problems brought on by Sutter. He refused to put Regehr on LTIR, thus violating the CBA.

Keenan's team in 2008-2009 missed winning the division by 2 loser points.

Sutter couldn't even get a first rounder for Phaneuf.
