^^Makes perfect sense to base the penalty on the result. From a fan perspective the blood and guts looks like fun, I suggest you have a look at the Good Friday Massacre back in 1984(believe me i enjoyed watching that!) for how things were handled in those days.
For the player, its not so much fun.
Its pretty hard to interpret the current NHL rules on what is a legal hit but there you have it from Shanahan: "Gryba makes Eller's head the principal point of contact, causing a serious injury..." That sounds pretty clear cut to me. Of course the fan boards always lineup on what team you like. I'll stick with Montreal on this one.

This suspension is a total and complete joke. Shanahan can try all he wants to explain it away but I'm suspicious that he was ordered to do this to put a muzzle on things. I think it was done SOLELY to calm things down, "justified" by the fact it's Eric Gryba, a depth defenseman that plays under 10 minutes per game. The way I see it, Paul MacLean obviously puts some stock in Gryba and they shouldn't have to lose him for 2 games just to appease the Canadiens with all of their whining or to ensure no retaliation.
If I'm Ottawa I double down and pick up the hitting and try to smash Montreal's micro forwards through the boards and basically dare the NHL to do something about it.
I also take as many fines as possible blasting the NHL.

They went with checking to the head rule...somehow. This doesn't make sense.

Just watched the video and couldn't help but notice that the reverse angle that Kerry Fraser used last night in his analysis (the one that shows Gryba putting the hip out and making contact there) wasn't included. Add all the shots used were from Section 213 Row 23.
Good transparency Shanny. Just pick the video that supports your case, and make sure it's from 50 feet away so no one can see anything anyways.
This just proves what I've thought all along. Bettman makes these decisions, and Shanny is just Mr. Step and Fetch It. Because it seems clear that Shanahan's experience as a player has no bearing in many of these rulings.
Guess I'm done watching the rest of the playoffs. I know it makes no difference to them as they won't notice one less viewer but I can't continue to support this circus.
I always suspected Shanahan was a fool, this just proves it.
