Le-land of the free and the home of the save... at least for a couple games I suppose

Let me preface this by saying I know you can't do this because every game counts.

But if you exclude the Boston debacle (a very special night where the team was incredibly flat and made a ton of errors), Irving put up a respectable .931 save percentage last year. He also stopped the handful of shots he had last night, and there were a couple of tough ones.

So with a team playing decently in front of him, he has shown he can stop the puck in the NHL. Hopefully the Flames play the same game in front of him that they have been playing of late and it will be good for everyone.

Funny, yesterday I was thinking to myself that the only chance Irving will ever get to prove himself is if Kiprusoff gets injured, sort of how Kipper broke into the Flames line-up. Then last night, bam, I get my wish (unfortunately).

I have no doubt Irving will at least be decent enough as to not be a detriment to the team.

TSN reporting that it is related to the MCL

Reports indicate that the injury the veteran Flames netminder suffered during Tuesday's 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings is related to the MCL in his knee but is not considered to be serious at this point.

What do they mean by related? Is it the MCL's hard luck cousin, the ACL?

This might be the best opportunity in the last 8 years or so, for a young back up goaltender to have success playing for the Calgary Flames.

I know it's only been seven games, but this team just seems vastly improved mentally, and I think they are ready to play in front of a goalie not named Kiprusoff.

That had to be an absolute thrill for him! I must say I really like Hartley's approach to the game. It's refreshing

It's not one of those things that you can necessarily quantify but I really do think that Hartley's attempt to make this organization more family orientated while keeping things light-hearted and fun is going to be beneficial for us in the long run. I'm thankful for all the Sutter's did for Calgary (moreso Darryl) but this place was a total pressure-cooker over the last few years... a changed approach could help mitigate some of the terrible mental issues this team has had recently.

As for Irving... the kid has been wanting a shot for a while and now he's got it. Hopefully he can hold the fort until Kipper comes back. Hopefully the rest of the team actually plays for the backup.

You can tell Hartley brings such a lighthearted and fun atmosphere to the club.

not sure about the pads, but the mask is Irving's from last season, so my uneducated assumption would be they too belonged to Irv.

I doubt they bring a second set of pads with them on road trips, and they look pretty clean, so I'm guessing those are Kipper's current pads (which is surprising because I wouldn't want some scrub sweating to death in my equipment). Mask is Irving's -- probably a backup mask in case his current one gets damaged.

That Mitch segment is great.
My interest in the Flames is totally revitalized, as we play an interesting style to watch and have a great tone to our team.

I'm really excited to see what we have in Irving and Taylor. Hopefully they get a few games each. Without being too contradictory, I hope Kipper has a speedy recovery and gets back on the ice.
