The Esso was called Porter's was pretty much the hub of all activity. I love how even almost two decades later, Chestermere is still perpetually filled with teenagers.

The drive wasn't overly bad, but it was enough to get tiring, and when it gets bad it can get BAD.
32km to downtown according to Google.
Chestermere is 19km from downtown, and there are multiple routes, so it's definitely better from that point of view.
Less stores in Chestermere, but easy ring road access makes most of the city easy to get to.
I like Chestermere more than Airdrie, but it's less of a town and more of a collection of houses and banks.
|
I moved from Strathmore to Chestermere in around 2005. I liked my house and the neighbours there, but I absolutely hated Chestermere itself. I moved there only because I moved my office out of my house and into some office space downtown.
Anyway, after a few years of commuting down town everyday, I just got fed up with it, and moved my office back home. Since then, we sold our house in Chestermere and moved back to Strathmore. I'm much happier now. Then again, I don't have to go into Calgary very often. If you are working in Calgary, the drive from Strathmore everyday would be a bit much.
It may not be for everyone, but I definitely prefer small town living to the Big City. Of course, when I was younger, I had a much different view.

I vowed to never live somewhere that would require taking Deerfoot trail to work on a daily basis.
Airdrie is OUT!

I spent a considerable amount of time in Airdrie at one point, and the place just rubbed me the wrong way, both the people and the town itself. It's mostly irrational I'm sure, but I can't stand it and could never live there. Okotoks is far more pleasing, as far as comparables are concerned...

I think alot of people would be schocked at how many Mormoms live here. It's not a bad thing though! They have hot daughters like Rinkrat said. And have you ever had Jello made by a mormom mom? Tastiest Sh*t ever. has little bits of fruit in it and taste's like kool-aid. Also I dont get why Basketball is so popular here. When I went to high school at bchs there would be more kids wearing rapter or laker jerseys everyday then a kid wearing a hockey jersey. Last spring I wore my Bruins jersey during final exam. I got weird looks.

I used to work at the garage/car wash next door, Porters pizza for lunch was the only thing that kept me from wrapping a hose around my neck.

You kept your Strathmore filth in Strathmore. Women with loose morals. Our Chestermere woman are just chachi bitches who act like sluts. It's the Strathmore girls that put out. Sluts.

From what I can see from reading this thread airdrie is twenty minutes away from everything. The town planners were absolute visionaries.

Personally, my wife and I are looking into Langdon. The only thing that concerns me, and we haven't fully looked into this, is access to schooling.
Airdrie is still on the map. Even Balzac.

From what I can see reading this thread is that people who don't do the drive in the morning don't know what they are talking about.
Clearly you haven't been reading close enough.
I'm sure I stated that it was 20 minutes to my work just off 32nd ave NE. That's not an exaggeration, that is at 8:30 in the morning. I get in my car at 8:30 and I'm in my desk before 9:00. Maybe it's because I head in at 8:30 but I rarely have any issues with traffic coming in I'm sure 7:45 is a little different..
Now if you heading downtown during rush hour there is no way it's 20 minutes. Minimum 30 with no traffic.
Once again, it's just as close to the core as the south communities so I'm not sure where the hate comes from.

The commute is the bone of contention for sure, I have to leave by 6:15 to be at my office for 6:40, parking directly at GCS on 9th.
If you have to be at work for 8:00 you may as well leave at 6:30....but if you work at 9:00, 8:20 works great. All this assuming a steady speed without the usual traffic accident......
That being said....coming home is a crap shoot, it's faster for me to go down 16th to Stoney then to sit on the highway.

I think the bottom line is if you work in north Calgary then Airdrie is great,if you work downtown or even farther south then Airdrie living is a bad alternative.
Put it this way. I live in Harvest Hills(12 minutes from Airdrie) and if I worked downtown I would consider myself dumb as paint to live here!
Time is life and life has a time limit, if your willing to spend 10 hours a week of your life commuting to work in rushhour your missing out and are plain stupid.

I agree 100%. Then again I still think the commute is worse if you living in the far south communities in Calgary. At least going back to Airdrie, once you hit 64th it's smooth sailing.

I live in new Brighton and the in laws live in red deer, and based on the number of times we have made the drive to RD in rush hour, to me deer foot is about the same north or south. Hitting 64th is like getting to Anderson road.........deerffot moves slower that you would expect it to in rush hour.

I can't understand the hate for cookie cutter houses either. If I had a choice I would pick a cookie cutter house by far. I've worked in old houses and cookie cutter houses. Old houses are a pain to do renos on, have limited electrical outlets, the wood in the basement is old and rotting (and smells), outside your house you have telephone poles and electrical lines all over the place etc etc etc.
Bigger lots you say? Why would I want to cut even more grass on a huge lot, do more gardening, more grass watering. Not something I feel like doing after a long day at work. I'm not a gardener.
Cookie cutter house, yes please.
