The Portland Winterhawks are a high octane team and there is some speculation of whether Baertschi was benefiting from his environment. What the 51% number (% of team offense) suggests, however, is that he is the straw stirring the drink.

With Pierro-Zabotel you couldn't knock him off the puck or out of the crease, he was too strong for the majority of WHL players, and along with good linemates who could get him to the puck, he just drove to the net or parked in front and waited. But, as time and time has shown again, at 210 pounds you can get away with that in the WHL, it's not as easy when you're going up against men. He couldn't make in the AHL and now he's in the ECHL, which comes to no surprise to everyone who watched him play and knew he wouldn't make it in the NHL without drastically improving his skating. And the list of big players who put up big points in the WHL who don't make it in the NHL is far bigger than those that do, like Cracknell. Thankfully Ferland is a better skater than Pierro-Zabotel, but like I said before, despite only being a couple spots below Bartschi in the leading scorer chart I don't got the same expectations, very few people do.

Good post.
I think the good thing about Ferland is that his upside is as a goal scoring power forward, but his downside is as an enforcer who can play. There may be other knocks about his skills, but I don't think anyone who's been watching his fights on youtube, can question his ability to fight.
If you can pick up a Chris Neil type in the low rounds of the draft, you've done a good job.

He could very well become a Brandon Prust type of spark plug - a guy that can fight and score some goals.

so long as we don't pull a Prust and trade Ferland twice.

That's the most encouraging number for me I think. I've been looking at % of team offense by Flames forward prospects for a couple of years and they have almost always settled between 25-35%. 51% is just off the charts.

I was just looking at the WHL scoring leaders and noticed that Sven was the only player over 2ppg, so I decided to check the entire CHL there are 3 players over 2ppg.
Colts OHL Tanner Pearson 19, Undrafted 2.2ppg
Winterhawks WHL Sven Baertschi 19, Flames 13th Overall 2.16ppg
Sting OHL Nail Yakupov 18, 2012 Eligible, 2.04ppg

Who's Tanner Pearson? I wonder if he would be worth a shot at a contract?

There's a cool article about him on TSN.ca right now. He made the World Jr team.

My face is a bum!
|
I will say "shutout" all day long at a Flames game where Kipper hasn't let any goals in yet, but being a long time Flames fan, a thread getting excited about a prospect scares the crap out of me.

Pearson is still eligible for the upcoming draft, therefore he can't be signed at this time. I think McKenzie said right now he'll probably be a second or third rounder. Must have some holes in his game considering the numbers he's putting up.

He's one hell of a late bloomer. Last season was 40 something points and this year decided he wanted to get drafted at the age of 20.
I don't know a whole lot about him, but they are apparently projecting him in the 1st round right now...just absolutely dominates the games he's been in though.

From what I have seen of Pearson, he is not the best skater, that's probably what's holding him back a little.

Iunno if it's proper to bump this thread for the WJC but I'm doing it anyways.
By the way, I don't know who is captain or anything and a quick googling didn't help me. I would assume Sven has some sort of leadership role, but who has the letters?
