I am not pro-union nor anti-union. I think they have their place in this dishonest business society. When the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer I think we will see a dramatic turn towards our fellow men and join up into unions again. Balanced, kind of like an ecosystem.
A union saved a lot of jobs for coal employees when coal wanted to simply increase profits. I'm for that.
A union that makes a company buy brand new construction boots every year? I'm against that. You can buy your own clothes and take care of them.
I guess I'm against wasteful business practice. I'm against glutton filled owners that make others do all the work but reap all the rewards. Anyway, unions do make sense, but just like owners should not, they should not take advantage of either. If money is there it should be properly spread out. If there are real losses then there has to be real change. This makes sense to me.

You didn't mock my post, you mocked me. It's nothing new, I've been ridiculed numerous times here because I hold what some views many might consider antiquated or immoral. I can take it, and I can dish it right back. I've been reprimanded once for it, and warned a second time,
What I now have a problem with is how I add my input to the thread, and while not everyone may agree, two other members--yourself included--have felt it necessary to insult me. You directly called me a dumbass, though you ironically spelled it incorrectly. And you are getting away with it scot-free.
Makes me wish I could hurl a string of personal attacks your way, but knowing this forum and the incredibly common occurrence of retaliation being punished rather than the first offense, I shall refrain.
I fully expect now to be further ridiculed and mocked for my pro-union stance. Hit me with your best shots.

Holy christ, dude. Are you serious? You spent that much time whining because I said your post was dumass? You want me to be suspended for it? Really?
You really do sound like a union type.

I wish that was due to the strike. About a month ago I got more mail not addressed for me than was addressed for me. I can understand confusing 'view' with 'landing' or 'mews' if it's the same house number, but when I'm getting parcel cards and government issued ID (wish I was joking) for 213 when I'm 84....
Spent half the evening strolling around the neighbourhood delivering mail.

On a personal note, I'm pissed that my Zip.ca blu-ray subscription will be affected. Actually it already has. The disc I received today was broken
On a professional note, the strike is costing me stress at work And I'm sure it's costing my employer quite the pretty penny to use a lot of couriers. Who pays? The customer's bills will go up and the employee bonus goes down.
And as far as unions go, I'm no expert, or even knowledgeable in any respect . But I was thinking that maybe unions should be mandatory for any job within X % of minimum wage. If it's above the x %, no unions are allowed. In the past, I get it, you needed unions. But I see no current need for them with the various laws protecting workers, in addition to things being a lot more transparent with the internet and cell phones. Laws to protect the human rights, and the market to decide who gets paid what.

"Going on strike strikes me as catastrophically disastrous for CUPW," said Lee. "It's just the worst possible thing that they could be doing because it's only going to drive away customers and accelerate the inevitable decline of the post office."
"Atoms travel down a highway in a postal truck at 80 km/h an hour, whereas bits and bytes travel over the Internet at 186,000 miles a second -the speed of light."
And the Internet doesn't go on strike.

Again, a lot of their business is parcels. Sending a letter is peanuts compared to the cost of sending packages. As soon as you show me how I can get this stuffed bear to my niece for her birthday over the internet, I'll buy the argument that Canada Post is now irrelevant. And the thing is I posted the same point pages back and the same "people do everything over the internet so we don't need Canada Post anymore" stuff keeps coming back up. Oi.
As for Zip.ca, I've been far more affected by their reduction of zip-refill than by this strike. Cinemail is hit harder given that the strike is going to hammer Winnipeg given that that is a key area for CUPW and they will probably rotate the strike through there often.
BTW - I LIKE when I get a broken DVD from Zip. They send you another copy plus a bonus DVD.

Don't feel like reading a million pages on this thread but has it been mentioned that some mail HAS to be sent out?
Any credit statements from a financial institution MUST be mailed out to the customers. Along with certain investment documents.
People are quick to say Canada Post and the service they provide is soon to be no longer needed. I believe it's the opposite.
If you aren't going to a brick & mortar store to buy your stuff somebody has to deliver it to your home.

I'm considering dropping zip.ca if they don't do zip refill anymore. Once I used up my zip points, I will go back to Canflix, they have 2 refill slots comparing to zip.ca's one.

That is false. I work for an FI and bank statements/credit card statements will not be mailed out. You can get them online or pick them up at a branch. anyone who orders cheques or needs a new credit card will have to wait until the strike is over. Anyone with GICs or a mtg renewal will get a phone call instead.
As long as you can access it via online, pick it up in branch or get the info over the phone there is no legal requirement to send it out via mail.

Actually, that's a patently ridiculous idea. You want to restrict certain democratic rights based on income level? Our soldiers died fighting against that sort of thing.
Jeez.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on the internet.
There are so many rights based on things as trivial as income level I don't know where to begin.
And to seriously bring up dead soldiers? WTF is wrong with you man?
Wait, was that supposed to be green text?

The Supreme Court of Canada in 2007 said otherwise.

Can I start collecting welfare then? Also, I'd like the low-income bus pass pricing.

Not sure what that has to do with Health Services and Support Facilities Subsector Bargaining Assn. v. British Columbia, 2007 SCC 27 or freedom of association in general.

Canada Post has called for a 24 hour walkout in Calgary starting at 9pm and Edmonton starting at 10pm.

This may just be ironic but I have not received a lick of mail since last Wednesday. I typically don't get any Monday or Friday strangely enough and a bunch on Tuesday. My guess is my carrier whether it is union or contract employee did not get the memo that Calgary was not going on strike until further notice last week.

Yep, they're on the front lawn at the sorting centre in the NE (and the road, almost clipped one trying to get into Tim Hortons)
For some reason, I'm not the slightest bit sympathetic to this group
