I've said it before, but I think the art direction on the dwarves is brilliant. This was one of my big fears, that a cast of 13 dwarves would end up looking like 13 Gimlis. They've done a great job of creating a bunch of different looks that really capture and differentiate the personality of each dwarf. They also seem to be very well-cast, but it's hard to tell from the relatively short clips that we've seen.
Aidan Turner really stands out, he's too good looking to be a dwarf!

I have never read any of the LOTR books, and I have never read The Hobbit. The LOTR movies were a spectacular achievement and were truly enjoyable and memorable. I am not getting the same vibe from the trailers and materials for the Hobbit I have seen so far.

And what vibe are you getting?
I know you said you haven't read any of the novels, but the tone of the Hobbit is drastically different from LotR.

The Hobbit seems kind of silly and childish so far. With all of the dwarves especially.
I could be way off base, I dunno. And I will probably give at least the first Hobbit movie a go.
The Hobbit is a child's book. So you're not that far off base. That being said, I think it looks to me to almost be more LotR-ish than the book itself. I'd defiantly give it a go, and then decide.

Colbert is a massive fan of Lord of the Rings, and he told the latest issue of Playboy magazine that he spent time in New Zealand in 2011 to film his scene.
"Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year," he told the men's magazine.
"I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing.
"Jackson knows I'm a big fan of the films."
When asked if he was going to be an extra in the films, Colbert reportedly smiled and told Playboy: "Could be."

I would expect this to be a bit lighter than LOTR.. but we don't know what is all included.
From what Jackson has said this isn't just The Hobbit, it is everything under the sun that wasn't included in LOTR.. so I would say to expect the unexpected?
Definitely don't try to hold it up to LOTR though, this is a whole new adventure with a lot of new characters (some returning).
