The A's have fired manager Bob Geren today. No surprise. Beane almost let him go in the winter. Bob Melvin named manager.

Had to be done. We were discussing earlier how the AL West would be tight and whoever fell 5 or 6 games off the pace by June 30 would be dead. Well it's only June 9 and the A's are already 8 back with no recovery in sight. Good pitching but no hitting.

Meet the new Bob, same as the old Bob. I suppose Bob Brenly will be next in Oakland?

Yup and having 3 starters hit the DL in a matter of 10 days as just killed the A's. They really need a new ballpark, something that is just a little more hitter friendly. Post steroids, the A's just haven't had the bashers for their home park.
They just finished losing their 10th straight game. At least I have football to look forward to.

Does the cooler air in the Bay Area also cause less home runs?

I'm not an A's fan, never have been (for obvious reasons) but now that the Metrodome isn't used by the Twins anymore is there a worse ballpark in the majors than McAfee?

SunLife/Pro Player/Joe Robi is by far the worst for baseball.

I suppose Pedrioa could be worse, his OBP is still around .370 so despite the fact that he hasn't hit a lot he's still been on base at a clip similar to his career average. Ellsbury is the guy who's probably had as big an impact on the BoSox rolling like they have. He's been doing a pretty good job being on base to let guys like Gonzalez and Ortiz drive him in, plus producing quite well driving a guy like Crawford in now that he's starting to hit better.
Come the summer months I think their offence is going to be absolutely lethal. Does anyone in the AL have a pitching staff deep enough to shut them down, and if they do, can they score enough against the Sox staff.

Simply talking from a fans perspective - but I've always loved McAfee outside of it's small concourse. Beautiful field with very nice sightlines.

Well the offense was pretty dominant this series against the Jays. This road trip sure has been good so far, Ellsbury is 14 for 30 and has 9 runs, Ortiz has 4 homers and 13 RBI, and Gonzalez is on a 9 game RBI streak, with 60 so far this season. It sure is a dangerous offense, and the summer will probably show how lethal it is.

The Phillies are right up there but I'm not sure they would come out of the NL. I think the Giants would give the Phillies a good run in a series. I don't think anyone in the AL can beat the Sox in a playoff series but lots can change and will change between now and October.

Offensively I think the Yankees are close to the Sox. But the Yankees staff right now is CC Sabathia and a bit of patchwork. Can you count on Freddie Garcia and Bartolo Colon to keep up how they've started for the entire season? A team like the Phillies has a high end rotation, but offensively the likes of Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins aren't doing that much this yet.
With the Red Sox offence looking to be in sync, and three guys in that rotation looking pretty strong in Lester, Beckett, and Bucholz I would agree that they're the best team in the majors, and they're starting to separate themselves from everyone else. If John Lackey can just give them quality starts they'll be a .670 team or better to close out the season.

On the 50th anniversary of the Mantle/Maris chase to 61 - Curtis Granderson and Texeiria are on pace with Mickey and Roger right now. Not good news for me, I pledged $7/Homer to Granderson's charity at the beginning of the year - could up being a big donation. Granderson has 21 and Tex has 20
edit Tex with 2 more tonight now at 21

I pledged $10 dollars/home run for every one off the bat of Ted Lilly.
Seriously - good for you though, that's great stuff. Love to see guys using their abilities for a better cause and for people like you donating! Good on you!
