It’s going to be interesting to see how this turns out. No RFAs will get an offer sheet so how this plays out will give a pretty good indication of who Chucky is and his future in the organization. A lot of high quality RFAs this year. Unless one or more GMs cave in I’m thinking they are going to try and stand united and hold the line on Salary this year. Salaries are getting out of hand!

Im not sure that's the case this time. Normally i would agree but its a different vibe around things.
Pretty unique situation this summer simply because of the volume of high end guys.
I can see Lou on the Island looking at a Marner and going crazy with something like 11X6 kind of offer. Maybe a 9.5 X 6 for an Aho if he wants to pressure Dundon.

The longer the flames go without subtracting salary the more concerned I get for a tkachuk offersheet

As a Leafs fan I would love to get 4 firsts from the NYI.
You take that with the cap space and move on.

Really? They were a top-three team in the East without Marner. How valuable are those four picks really going to be?

Not me....I see Tkachuk as a top 30 guy in the entire league in the next 3 years.
He can play...i have no idea what those 4 picks can do or where they will even be in the draft as the Islanders have a base for a good club for the next 3 or 4 years now.
Lou is good at this thing.

There are teams with higher profile RFAs who play higher value positions, and with deeper cap concerns than the Flames at the moment. With the number of teams in even more dire situations I am less worried about this.

I don't think the rest of the league is as enamored with Tkachuk as they are with other top RFA's. He's a winger, his skating is still an issue, and his performance in the playoffs probably didn't move the needle for a lot of teams. Never say never but I highly doubt any team is considering putting forth an offer sheet that the Flames will not be able to match for this player. If there are any offer sheets this year they will be for Mitch Marner as he's a more dynamic player and the Leafs have cap issues.

...or Brayden Point. He would be my first target.

I was thinking Aho is the perfect target. Dundun would dig in and refuse to pay anything over his level. And what team has less ammo to get retribution for an offer sheet than Carolina? What would they do....have a special storm surge?

Tre maybe should zig when everyone zags. Sign everyone to reasonable deals but Tkatchuk. Trade Frolik or Brodie to clear space (not both) and show the agent what’s left including some cushion for later in the year. Is he a team player or not. At least you have a hard stop. Doesn’t solve term but at least get some business done and put some pressure on him.

If I would ever offer sheet, I would want Timo Meier, get a great player or shaft a division rival. win-win

I wonder what it would take to get Nylander from TO. Wouldn’t they want to move him out to free up some Marner-Space?
Brodie plus picks and prospects for Nylander
Frolik somewhere else to get some picks back.
$ even out.
TO gets young top-4 D plus picks, prospects and cap space
Calgary replaces 1-2 of those picks and has a top 6 of Johnny, Monny, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Nylander, Backlund

Right now we have enough money to sign everyone we need to sign. Any deals that zero out incoming and outgoing $ are absolutely doable (from a money perspective).

Curious about this... which teams have the capspace to make an offer sheet work and the draft picks?

Something I’ve just learned recently: while the four picks have to be the team’s own picks, they do have a five-year window to draw from. It just has to be 4 of the next 5 picks.

I assume that is for a maximum compensation offer sheet (which Tkachuk would not get). What are the rules for making a lower offer, and needing to surrender only a 1st + 2nd + 3rd?

Maybe I just crave chaos... but I think it'd be fun to have someone offer sheet Tkachuk, we take the compensation, and then we offer sheet Point.
