I think the city should go to a two week schedule in the winter months.

I like that idea.
I fill one of the small counter top bins a week.

Since I don't really eat at home, I have a quarter of a small pail bag to throw out every week. I'd be totally ok with them doing once every two or three weeks in the winter time.

we have two adults and 1.5 teenagers and could likely go three weeks to a month before filling the green bin.
I was wondering the other day if that bin will ever attract a skunk or raccoon though - I have seen a few in my hood

Whelp, I thought that was the whole point of these green bins.
At least use the bins for body disposal if you're going commit the worst, most disgusting horrible act possible to increase your environmental damage/carbon footprint . . . having a kid.

I'm on board with this,
Really its probably only may - sept that you need a weekly dump.
But it could get a little stinking in Mar/April/Oct.
Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb, no problem. City should save 1/6 of the cost there.

Yes I wonder the total environmental impact of driving that collection truck around once a week to collect mostly empty carts.
Our house like most has a garburator so all but the hardest stuff goes down there. We put exactly 1 glad compost bag in a week. Mostly banna peels and avacado pits and bones. For a family of four.
Seems like a waste. Would rather get black bin back weekly as we are now filling a second trash and leaving it out for collection.

Our family of 4 including a 2 and four year old gave abiut 2 pails a week. Garbage is barely full after 2 weeks though. Recycling we could use a bigger cart

Stuff that goes down the garburator has to be treated at our water plants later on. Composting is supposed to relieve pressure put on our water treatment plants.

I need 10 more weeks to slowly decant the 20+ bags of leaves I raked up this year though...
(Too lazy to go buy more of the big paper ones)

Yup, this puts undue pressure on our water treatment plants. Better to compost it.

You'll have healthier grass if you rack in the spring after letting the best parts of the leaves decomp over the lawn a bit durring spring thaw

We've had the green bins in Airdrie since April 2014. Starting Nov 1, they move to pick up every 2 weeks, and then it goes back to every week in April or May, can't remember - probably April. Works well. We could probably, for our family, stick the green bin out for pick up only once per month in the winter, except around the holidays.

I could swear I heard on the radio this morning that Sean Chu was going to bring up two-week pickups for compost bins in Council. If so, that's probably the smartest thing he's done.

CP people talked about the idea, I brought it up on twitter on the #yyccc feed, lots of positive feedback. I think he picked it up and ran with it.
So, CP deserves the credit. Well done, CP.

I recently found out parchment can go in the green bin. This was good news to our household.
Anybody else have questionable items that can/cannot be composted?
What about the baby bell wax coatings?
