With the Flames projected to need to spend $15M in 2027-28 just to reach the cap floor I don't think Huberdeau's contract is giving enough grief to give up an asset to get rid of it at this point, either.

This is why it’s critical we suck for 2 seasons and we’re halfway there on one. Having Wolf, McKenna, DuPont, Parekh, Gridin, Reschny, Coronato plus plus would set us up to be a contender.

2 isn't going to be enough. It's going to need to be 3 years of top 3 picks to get this team back on track.

Laine’s cap isn’t really worth that much cause his deal expires after this season. Something like this would allow the Flames to take cap back to make a deal work without retaining on Kadri.
It’s pretty realistic as Montreal isn’t looking to make a big splash this year but they may move a first for Kadri in a deal like that.
I’m pretty bearish on Kadri’s value though with his age; happy to be surprised, but doubt he gets traded for much unless Calgary retains quite a bit.
(The trade proposed to Seattle would never work)

[QUOTE=ComixZone;9637210]Here's a fun one for conversation:
To MTL: Kadri
To CGY: Laine, 2026 1st
Montreal doesn't overpay for their immediate step-in/longer-term support for Hage and team. Calgary doesn't have to retain money on Kadri.
/QUOTE]
I still like the Habs for Kadri, but for three playoffs I feel like he is worth more than a mid-1st round pick and a cap dump.
I would propose:
To MTL: Kadri, Hanley or Pachal
To CGY: Laine, 2026 1st, Zharovsky

How are you so connected to every team in the league, even their draft lists. If you have any smarts to you would be monetizing this

If everything goes incredibly, fortunately well. This team will be in a position to possibly be relevant in in 2034/35 season

I wouldn't put anyone in order yet, including Vancouver. McKenna is known for having impressive second halves to his seasons, and if he goes on a tear in his second half at Penn State, he might be undeniable as the #1 pick again. Lots of time left for prospects to jostle for position, rise and fall, or put an exclamation mark on their pedigrees.

Yeah, I mean that's three summers out, most teams aren't anywhere near the cap floor three years out lol. You're looking at the Flames missing for forwards, three D and two more guys on the roster. Would be nice if Parekh has earned a monster deal at that point though.

It is about 17 months from now, so not really 3 summers out. Parekh will still be on his rookie deal.

That’s a lot of very good prospects, but most hsve proven nothing in the NHL.
So, we need to suck for two years, win the lottery twice and have multiple prospects pan out.
But we start by finishing at the bottom of the league.

My board at this point is : 1. Stenberg, 2. McKenna 3. Verhoeff 4. Björck 5. Carels .... then Lawrence. He hasn't really done anything at the NCAA level. I don't think you take him just because hes a centre. His USHL production (1.3 PPG) was good, but not "Top 5 Pick" dominant.
On a side note though I dont think we talk enough about the late round picks. I think a good money ball pick would be JP Hurlbert. This guy has average skating so he gets passed over by scouts (just like Robertson did) but he has insane goal scoring release and IQ...hes basically Jason Robertson. He ranks in the 95th Percentile for goals scored from the slot and is at 1.63 PPG.... I would take a swing at him with one of our other picks. If we dont, Dallas will.

The Sabres have acquired Gavin Bayreuther from Carolina for Viktor Neuchev in a trade for players with "eu" in their name.
Bayreuther has played in 122 NHL games but is currently in the AHL. He was actually claimed by Seattle in the expansion draft from Columbus, became a free agent, and then signed with Columbus again.
Neuchev was a third round pick with middling AHL production.

I guess there are no good players elsewhere in the league that might help, eh?
The guys you pick in 3 years won't be doing much until, what...2030-31? You still need - at some point - some vets to provide experience and cohesion to the rookie group.
I wouldn't be overly surprised if Flames get some top picks for the '26 draft that they add (back) some young-mid veteran presence for next year, depending on trades between now and then.
