Ugh I'm up there this weekend too. They were supposed to get a lot of rain this weekend, but I see it's been bumped to next week now.

This is why I've been getting out in the sun this month every chance I've had, I knew it was only a matter of time. I'm almost surprised it took this long..

We were bailed out by an unusual southeast wind. It's now from the north, but looks to switch back to the south on Thursday morning, and be good until Sunday. Which is so far away I don't trust it. So hopefully that holds, and we are clear again Thursday.

Good visual

We've had denser smoke, but don't think I recall it being so strong smelling before - even when it was the Canmore/Banff fires next door. Are they growing Hickory or Mesquite up there by Edson???

I would be willing to pay a hell of a lot more tax solely for a firefighting budget that could reduce the amount of days like this. I feel like for all the global warming warnings and consequence talk, summer being ruined by smoke was not very high in my radar.

This smoke seems worse than 2018.

Holy Hannah do we ever need rain.

I recall it smelling very strong in past years, guessing we just get used to it

We need rain, and lots of it. Selfishly not until after the long weekend now....

And it's likely going to have a negative effect on our business (my employer) either way now. Rigs are possibly shutting down due to fire risk and ironically the thing we need most (rain) will also put a damper on drilling activity.

Funny you mention that as a guy just walked in the office saying it smells like Mesquite BBQ out there. It does smell pretty bad right now and I'm sure these strong winds aren't helping matters.

I'm not going to discount that it seems increasing in nature but in the late 80's, early 90's I lived in small town AB and several buddies worked for the forestries in the summer and some summers I rarely saw them as they were out and about fighting fires. The difference is in those days if you didn't read the paper or watch the 6:00 news you weren't being alerted about it all the time so out of sight, out of mind unless the smoke travelled to our town. Alberta and a lot of BC are arid to semi-arid climate so fires are always high possibility in the summer.

I would happily enjoy a rainy May long weekend if it meant less of this smoke. You can't even enjoy being outside when it's like this.

Holy crap is it ever dark outside now. The wind is really howling out there today too. My significant other road her bike from Edworthy Park to her office downtown and she is going to be miserable coming home if it stays like this.

The thing that’s getting me is that virtually all of these are from man-made sources. We haven’t had lightning or other natural ignition causes yet. My SIL has a ranch with her boyfriend up by Breton and their neighbour almost started one with a burning barrel (they barely managed to get it under control before it spread). I’m furious with all of these a-holes who can’t seem to help themselves.

Am I crazy? It doesn’t seem that hard to not start a fire. In fact, I’m not starting a fire as I write this.

Our summers are so short already, it is brutal to have them ruined by forest fire smoke.

Up in the northwest part of the province, there used to be a pretty heavy moss and undergrowth presence. I'm guessing that it has dried out the last couple of years and that stuff dry produces a tonne of dense smoke.

This is the same problem that Wood Buffalo and Yukon have put everyone on alert for in the last couple of years. Permafrost is melting, and leaving a cake of dry moss behind.
