I checked a bag for the first time in a decade about 2 months ago. It was a business trip / vacation so couldn't fit it all in.

Not only is there the cost and the time to wait at baggage claim, but on the way back to Calgary, you had to individually check your bag at the checkin desk which literally took an hour.

It's insane

So...you don't know.

Of course it's well researched how to optimize timing to account for things like wake disturbance/etc. But airports don't run like Swiss train stations...it's a lot more on the fly than you'd think:

https://news.mit.edu/2016/cut-airpor...uel-waste-0114

Quote:
“It’s mostly on the fly,” she says. “Sometimes, if there is a controller with a lot of experience or intuition, they might actually decide they’ll hold aircraft back. Historically, though, they don’t, they just let everybody go. Which is why you have queues of 40 aircraft waiting at the runway. And you want to avoid that.”

To prevent extended runway queues, Balakrishnan and Simaiakis developed a model to predict taxiing time. The model consists of two modules; the first calculates a plane’s travel time from the gate to the departure runway, taking into account any interactions with other arriving and departing flights. For instance, a plane headed toward a clear runway may have to cross an active segment, causing a delay in its taxiing. The second module estimates an individual runway’s queuing delay — the time it takes for a plane to take off after joining the queue for takeoff.

...
“If you predict only 10 aircraft are likely to take off in the next 15 minutes, you probably don’t have to release 25 aircraft from the gate,” Balakrishnan says. “Ultimately, you want to find the right number of aircraft you need to be releasing in order to make sure you don’t have a huge amount of congestion on the ground, and at the same time you’re not starving the runway.”
So basically you want enough planes queued up so you don't end up under-utlizing runway capacity, but not so many that it gets messy and planes are just idling and wasting fuel.

They can’t wait, because as you said they have stuff in overhead bins all over the plane. And then they’ll lose their imaginary race against the people who checked bags as well as fail to shave 20-40 mins off a ~7 hour door to door adventure. It would be truly devastating to their street cred.

I'm also such an over-packer so I can't even get my head around that. I hate how I'm like that but I can't help it. Plus I'm usually going places where the weather flirts between different seasons. Could be +30 or +10. I have no idea how to pack light for those situations.

Strictly enforced is the key, yes. While people wait around for the airplane to allow boarding, they should be going around to people and testing their bags to make sure they fit in the little carry-on bin size checker thing. If your bag does not fit, the best solution is to then confiscate the bag and throw it in a large industry looking barrel, pour gasoline over the bag and light it on fire.

I would imagine the carry-on problem would get fixed pretty quick after that and it would only be just a small handful of measly little lawsuits you have to deal with wherein the damages would be small, whatever is in the suitcases to compensate people. Well worth it for the future comfort of your customers and showing that your rules actually mean anything. People would catch on fast, I bet.

In fairness to them (and I hate Telus) the credit card companies are charging them big fees. Previously they weren't allowed to pass any of that on to customers until a recent court case. Of course what they should do is simultaneously reduce the fee for non-credit card payments so that the total revenue is the same, but I don't imagine very many companies will do that.

It also allocates carryon space in a manner that rewards loyalty and paying more.

If efficiency is key you would board windows back to front, middle back to front, aisle back to front and you would have people line up on a spot based on their seat. Compare how they load amusement parks where throughput matters to airlines.

Also the problem isn’t rolling suitcase people. They maximize bin capacity. It’s the backpacks that exceed a dimension that are allowed on anyway that destroy bin space. It should be strictly enforced as per The stated dimensions

Yeah, wearing one pair of sneakers for a trip is crazy. I don’t know how I do it without several pairs of shoes, bud.

I am now imagining a person that packed only one set of clothes and is miserable for their entire vacation just so they don't break their "I never check bags!" streak.

I always have a pillow on me everywhere but it's a Nemo Fillo Elite so it takes up no space whatsoever.

To be fair, the single pair of shoes was the least eww part about it

A large group of crows and magpies are involved in a gang war directly outside my place and it’s ####ing deafening. Just non stop squawking for the last 45 minutes.

STFU #######s!!

If they’re gonna fight at least make it cool to watch but with all the trees I can’t actually see much.

Not sure why you’d imagine that, but that’s a weird choice and not accurate.

How small is this bag, or how big are your clothes?

A regulation carry-on can easily fit a weeks worth of clothes and a couple pairs of shoes (plus those on your feet). Also, laundry? If you're going anywhere for several weeks you'll need laundry at some point regardless.

There may be a wild animal around your area. I often see this happen in my neighborhood and the birds are following around a bobcat. I agree it makes a hell of a noise

Oh, yeah! I had 5 magpies verbally chasing an owl out of a tree in my yard a couple years back. It was so loud (and took them nearly an hour) that I was tempted to turn the hose on them.
