Yeah, so far this is Hertl's best season at 41 pts. Teravainen only has 40 career points. I don't see either of them as dramatically ahead of Jankowski potential wise

I see Janko being THE guy next year down in Stockton by the end of that season. He's got all the tools to succeed and the Flames continue to develop him the right way. Im excited to see him turn pro and I think he has 2nd line upside/potential at the NHL level for sure.

I'm getting pretty excited, it's been a long wait to see Jankowski go pro.
Just a couple more weeks. I also hope he keeps 77 as his pro number.

Pretty simple question... what do you consider acceptable criteria for jankowski being a good draft pick?
I will again try to help you out:
1) Best player out of the 2012 draft... Better than Lindholm, Trouba, Dumba, Hertl, Tervanien, Ceci, Pearson, Hellebuyck and Forsberg?
2) 40 games in 2016/17 as a 4th liner?
3) 100 NHL games by end of 2017/18 w/ 40 NHL pts?
4) w/ 20 NHL points?
5) Full time NHLer with 25-30 pts 5 years after he was drafted (like Colborne) make that 6 because he was drafted so young?
what level of performance will you want from Jankowski to declare I told you so... it was a great pick

I would think that the criteria for considering it a successful draft pick would be for him to get to the level that the 7 players that the Flames passed on to trade down to pick Jankowski (and then also get Sieloff)
.
|
Would it not be best to just compare him to previous players picked in the same spot of 21st overall?

Uhm, maybe, maybe not. they do have a history of tossing in NCAA players into the fire right away once they sign. They did it with Arnold and Gaudreau. Im pretty sure they did with Hanowski as well. What was it management and coaches said. "It gives them a taste of what to get ready for for next year, gives them an idea of what they need to do to prepare for camp"

Does it even matter man? Let the process actually play out because until Janko is given a considerable amount of time at the pro level you cant call it a bad/bust pick as much as anyone else cant call it a great pick. It was widely known that Jankowski was a project pick and honestly so far what's not to like???
Skipped out on the USHL and went straight to NCAA
Progressed each season including being a big part of last years championship
Leader in many areas this year - first Friar to hit over 40 points in over 12 years
Still is only 22
Has added a ton of size/weight to his frame, he's ready to be a pro
He is pretty good at faceoffs
He's defesively reliable
Janko basically checks off a lot of the boxes the Flames were hoping to get when they picked him...
I dont know how you could possibly be dissapointed in this pick atm

He already did a few weeks ago, citing a "source" close to the family saying that although the Flames have treated Jankowski well and have given him no reason not to sign, Jankowski has all the leverage and 29 other NHL teams would love to sign him.
Then Francis on 960 Friday said he is 99% sure Jankowski will sign with the Flames. So sounds like his usual alarmist bs

For a late 1st rounder:...
If he plays 100 NHL games, it's a decent pick
If he becomes a full-time NHLer, it's a good pick
If he becomes a consistent top 9er it's a great pick
If he becomes a consistent top 6er it's a fantastic pick
If he becomes a top liner it's a home run.
Any more detail than that is really just noise

Yeah, this is the only way it makes sense. Comparing him to players that weren't available at the time Jankowski was picked has no bearing on whether he was a good draft pick or not. You can debate the merits of trading down, but if Jankowski doesn't end up as good as Hertl or Teravainen it doesn't mean he was the wrong pick at 21. I suppose you could compare him to the players drafted after him...

This is what makes this forum so much fun....
Teravianen is exactly 2 days older than Jankowski.... he has played 100 NHL games and has 40 pts. He has 10 point in 18 playoff games.
Jankowski and the Flames 1st pick this year (say $5 or 6 overall) might get Chicago to trade us Teravainen.
You somehow have Jankowski having a 40 pt season .... over the next couple of years? ever?
How much better is Jankowski than Arnold or Corbin Knight?

Most likely. If Providence gets eliminated next weekend, he'll likely sign his ELC to burn this season. If he does that, he can't play in the AHL, and he'd count on the Flames' roster the rest of the season, so there's no reason to not give him some action.
If they lose next weekend, he probably signs with the Flames on Sunday or Monday and joins the team in California. He'll then likely make his NHL debut in either Edmonton on April 2, or against LA in Calgary on April 5.

Does what you think make any sense to you while you're thinking it? What on earth does this spiral of hypothetical futility have to do with anything?

He has the potential to be significantly better than either of them. He has the potential to be as good or better than Hertl and Teraainen. You don't seem to understand potential, development, and other such hockey concepts.

If you think Teravainen is worth Jankowski and a #5-6 pick, then your opinion of players is completely skewed.
Is Gaudreau worse than Nugent Hopkins just because he was older when he came into the league and has more games played?

Wow man... How much data at a PRO level do you have to basically say he's no better than Arnold/Knight. The type of player Janko is and the tool box he has makes him miles ahead of either of those guys. Time will tell if he is or not but the key thing in that statement is TIME. Give him a chance to play at the pro level before writing him off as a fringe NHLer.
Your ability, or lack there of, to understand prospects take time to develop is astounding... Would you have been saying the same thing about Tomas Tartar after he hadn't cracked Detroits line up after 4 full AHL seasons?? Would you write him off as a tweener??? Get some perspective man.

That has never been in doubt. He regularly shows his opinion of NHLers is completely skewed (see Stempniak) so how could his opinion of non NHLers be any better? RicardoDW has his own invented world that he exists in which has zero to do with reality.

Just positionally alone he'll play a more integral role to overall team success.
Even if the tops out at a defensively sound #3 C, he'll be important. I love TT and Hertl but as wingers I feel they've been lined up with some pretty saavy players to boost their numbers. They're good and i'd love them on the team but Jano as a big Center has so much more potential to help with team success. I'd love for Janko to put out tons of points but I wanted him to be a more complete player than those people are comparing him to.
EDIT: And I still believe that Jankowski's offence will bloom once he adapt to the pro game.
