So I've finally found a new job after a long stretch of unemployment, which in and of itself is happy-making. The thing that's really hitting me right now is how different the environment is.

I've changed fields and thus needed new certifications, and during the process it's been pure positivity and help; in my last field getting certified was overwhelmingly negative to the point where it felt like they wanted me to fail (the fact that I needed three tries to please their standards just added fuel to that fire). Yesterday even after my last step and they told me I was ready I was *still* expecting to hear "these are all the ways you went wrong". Looks like I'm in a better place already.

I've been running for years but my daughter got into it this year. She completed her first half marathon last weekend and we ran it and crossed the finish line together. We then went for a nice lunch on a patio by the water with some of her friends who were there cheering her on. Just a very cool experience for a Dad.

Character is NOT dead!

Today I'm at my oldest's school doing some volunteer work - it's "fun lunch" day, so my job is taking food to the classrooms. I get to the final classroom and dropped off the last order, and one of the kids walks up to me and says "thanks for your work - this is for you" and he hands me a loonie - freakin' kids tips me! Naturally I don't want to take his money and tell him it's not necessary and he can keep it. Wrong answer - he says "no, you're awesome and you brought us food, keep it!". This goes on for about minute. I really don't want to take it, but the llttle guy isn't gonna take no for an answer. This is clearly important to the kid, so I bite the bullet, tell him he's an honorable and thoughtful little man for thinking of others like that - character is something you're born with, he's got it by the bucket load and it'll carry him far. Soon as I'm back at the office I hand the loonie to the staff (it became a school donation - happy to help him feel proud but I'm not keeping a kid's money!) and tell them about what just happened. About ten minutes later the kid is in the office with a scraped knee, so as he's getting patched up I let the staff know who the little man was and what he did. Soon as the bandaid is on they're giving him a certificate for being a thoughtful kid and telling him the same thing about how respectful he was. His reply was pretty simple and profound: "I just like making people happy".

This is a good kid who clearly has good parents. If this is the kid of a CP'er, I hope you're as proud of him as he was of himself.

Found out I’m an uncle for the 9th time today. A few years back my sister had cancer, they removed a 14 lbs tumour from her liver and it was touch and go for a while, so this is an amazing turnaround.

My sister is an amazing person, thank you for that.

After her second child, she knew something wasn’t right and advocated heavily for herself. This led to the diagnosis, treatment and eventual successful recovery. Tough to do at the best of times, let alone while raising an infant, a preschooler and running a company.

Anyways, I’m excited to meet my third nephew.

Air Canada approved my compensation claim for my delayed flight from Portugal to Montreal. I didn't have to fight with them. I didn't have to threaten anything. I just sent them a well-worded email citing the EU laws protecting passengers. And a couple weeks later, they approved it and offered me cash or a higher amount in credits.

I realize I'm putting this in a happy thread, but it also kind of grinds my gears that the Europe protections for passengers is so much better and we don't get it. I looked at the on-time record for the flight from Lisbon to Montreal, and it was north of 85%. My second flight from Montreal to Sydney in Canada was almost 50-50 on time. I don't think that's a coincidence. I think because the European laws are good for protecting consumers, they always make sure that they have enough aircraft and mechanics and #### to keep them running in Europe.

In this case, they said it was a mechanical issue, and in Canada, they would deem that a security thing, like a safety thing. But in Europe, it specifically mentioned that routine maintenance issues are not considered an extraordinary event, which it isn't. Parts break, planes need fixing, and it's the airline's responsibility to have proper equipment and proper staff to prevent lengthy delays.

I had a buddy who was flying in for one night and wanted to meet up late.

Thing is... he's the pilot for the commercial aircraft.

There was a mechanical issue that delayed the flight by 30 min. I sent him a text asking if he still wanted to get together, since he had to fly out early the next morning.

He assured me it would be no problem. He arrived 10 min early. When I asked how, he said he burned extra fuel to get there faster to meet up on time.

I hope his passengers appreciated it as much as I did!

LOL

Careful - you're veering into anti-semantic territory. Next, you'll be denying the existence of Palpatine.

24 years ago I got to see AC/DC when they came to Calgary. It was the greatest concert experience of my life. Row 3 dead center on the floor (a friend won the lottery for ticket purchases IIRC).

A few days ago I took my 11 year old son to his first concert. AC/DC in Pasadena. He had started listening to them on his own last year (nobody more surprised than me).

When they first stepped on stage I thought it was an old folks home cosplaying as AC/DC. But jesus h chris do those lads know how to rock.

We had as good a time as we may have ever had.

At least so far. :-)

Unbelievable a corporation would do something like that on their own. So unbelievable I had to Google it.

Cable companies still seem to get away with this nonsense. Want to add channels or upgrade online - no problem! Want to remove programming - call and wait on hold.
