I will admit to using Thorn quite a bit in the doubles playlist.
It is really the difference when it is 1v1, as the DoT keeps the other guy from getting his health up.

In 3v3 games (elimination, trials, salvage, skirmish) you don't spawn with special ammo anymore. The exception to this is sidearms.
Basically, over the last few days the meta in those game types has shifted to weapons that generate ammo (invective/icebreaker) or to NLB/sidearm.
My guess is that trials this week will be dominated by NLB/sidearm in the first few rounds, or someone will simply equip a sidearm to start, and jump off the map. While dead, switch to sniper, and have your teammate revive you. Presto - instant snipe ammo.
I don't think it'll be as extreme as intentional suicides since losing 5 seconds of getting to a setup could be crucial. More likely you'll see Icebreaker/Sidearm for round 1 and then they'll promptly switch after the round is over. The concerns about a team picking up special and steam rolling the other in future rounds isn't really a big deal either.
On one note, Rescue Mag on my shotgun gives me an incredible advantage in the early game when special hasn't spawned and I get my magazine magically filled from being hurt.

That's an interesting idea. I hadn't considered rescue mag at all, thanks for the tip.
I'm personally going to go with NLB/Sidearm. If I get knocked down I'll promptly switch to my 1KS/Mida.
Depending on the map, I could absolutely see people suiciding to get at the special ammo, but I agree, certain maps need you to be at certain chokes early enough or the round can go really badly for you.

Nothing wrong with using a Thorn. I have that and a Mythoclast sitting in my Titan's slots, ready to go lol. But trying to snipe with a Thorn? You're gonna have a bad time!

Haha. I had no idea how I was getting special when I was playing crimson doubles the other day. Rescue mag it is. Quite different from the other interesting theories me and my buddy came up with.
Maybe its because I haven't been playing lately, but arn't Thorn and Icebreaker still locked at Y1 damage? I feel like it would be disadvantage to run around with those, even if you don't get special to start.
I guess I'll just have to play some and get a feel for it.

Light level advantage is disabled for Crimson Doubles.

This.
I could probably use thorn in light level enabled game types, but my light would be ~295-300.

As much as I want to hold to that weird pride/Y2 mentality, I can understand why people want to continue to use Thorn and the perfectly rolled weapons. Exotic handcannons in general are still the best, whether for their exotic perk, range and/or aerial accuracy. Especially the latter, there's just no competition for primaries.
Still doesn't change how I think Thorn is too strong as I try to get better at it.

I'm not sure if you watch competitive scrims or follow them much, but the team that most recently won a tournament was running Thorn/Shotgun. Youtube "Luminosity" he's legit.
Thorn is a 3 shot kill, body shot or headshot, doesn't matter. That's why it is so potent in non-light enabled game types. The burn is just gravy, because due to the high fire rate, you can squeeze three shots off really fast and then duck behind cover.

I follow them a bit and have even playing more in that scene. It's not only those factors with Thorn but it holds one the higher ranges with handcannons using Send It. Especially since it's in the highest firing archetype making it feel almost impossible to react in an engagement. Being triple tapped sucks, but it's even worse when it feels/sounds like only 2 bullets have been shot.

The more and more I enjoy playing around in Rumble with friends, the more I wish we could have private lobbies to practice and mess around with.
Four of us were able to match each other up in Doubles yesterday, and it was glorious. Especially with all four of us in the same chat party. Call outs were just straight hilarious!
Though, there are a lot of PvP modes with no light level difference and I still rarely see any Y1 stuff. I never use it anymore, even if they might be the better option, because I used it so much already, I'd rather play with the newer stuff. Though that argument is wearing a bit thing itself too.

It's actually kind of funny... everyone is so excited to pull out y1 weapons, and use them. You can use them during regular crucible guys.
Running into a lot of suicide squads now in doubles... we were going to do it but decided to play with ToM and use last bullet only. Was actually kind of fun, had a defender titan run a blessing bubble just for schitts and giggles. If a team was killing themselves by jumping off then we'd troll them a bit and make sure to tie the match. Had one match where it took almost 30 minutes for someone to win round 1... It was late, and we were bored, and I'm still chasing that crimson ghost.
I get the sense that my crew will never make the Lighthouse yesterday lol. We had a pretty rough go yesterday. Apparently I'm awful at avoiding snipes, especially given all the sniper lanes on Rusted Lands.
LOL my buddy even got a carry from TheTrueVanguard yesterday. And my buddy ain't no scrub either. He out-killled both TV and his partner in the first 3-4 games, and yet they still lost games 7 and 9 and couldn't make the Lighthouse. We're doomed to be forever Lighthouse virgins!

Well that's no good man!
Do you record your gameplay at all? That can be a huge way to improve.
Really try to analyze each death, how you died, why you died, and what you could have potentially done differently.
The key to trials is teamwork. You don't need to be the best shot with guns, but if you can prime the baddies with grenades and team shot, you can make up for a lot of shortcomings in 1v1 slaying power.

True Vanguard is good, but your explanation is a perfect example of how high level skill can fail to a good team.

Yeah, a map like that especially is tough because you can hardscope the few entries if a team really wanted to camp you out either in spawn or B flag. I'd offer to help though the fact that TrueVanguard do it really goes to show it isn't guaranteed with the kind of teamwork/skill out there. Still, I won't say no to playing some Trials if I'm free.
Highlights from Crimson Doubles.

My buddy felt so jilted by TV because he was using his "fun load out" during that carry rather than his normal TLW/1KYS. Didn't even change it when they were down 3-0 in the last round. On the bright side he made it into his latest YouTube Montage lol
