As an update:
-The parents have postponed any trip to claim the body. The mother would likely be arrested on outstanding charges and probably wouldn't come anyways. Both parents have also been placed on the no-fly list. They have moved to another undisclosed area of Russia.
-Russia was wiretapping the mother and they overheard discussions of jihad between mother and son. FBI says the conversation was "vague". At the time Russia told the US to look into the older son, the mother was put on the TIDE list (list of half a million terrorists or potential terrorists)
-Russia killed two jihadists in Dagestan. One was a close friend of the groups leader.

Here's a great update on Jeff Bauman, the young fellow who lost both his legs and helped the FBI identify Tamerlan:

Ron Paul on the Boston Police.
"The Boston bombing provided the opportunity for the government to turn what should have been a police investigation into a military-style occupation of an American city," Paul wrote on the website of Lew Rockwell, a libertarian writer. "This unprecedented move should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/onpoli...trick/2121727/
I would argue the opposite...the directive from law enforcement not only potentially saved lives but allowed them to concentrate on the investigation so they didn't need to turn things into a military style occupation. And kudos for the majority of the population recognizing their role and allowing the police to do just that.

Pretty unfair to blame the government IMO, at least the current government.
The current public hysteria in the US pretty much demands extreme measures in order for a president to look like he's "doing something".
I guess you could blame the Bush administration for their rampant use of fear tactics, but then again I'm not sure how fair that would be either.

should point out that there was no military-like occupation of Boston. It could be argued that a 20 block portion of Boston was but they were doing a manhunt. There was no "occupation" of any other part of the city, just a request/subtle hint to remain indoors and if you wereirout an about you would likely be questioned. i don't call that an occupation and I don't think Ron paul knows what one is either. That is police doing their jobs.

Yeah, gotta disagree with Ron Paul there. It feels like what was needed was done, and I think the fact that the public helped out so much and was co-operative with all the measures shows just how correct the measures were.
Now if they had a lock down for a week and people were complaining or running out of essentials it might be a different story, but I haven't read much (any really) about people seeing the measures as anything but a minor and important inconvenience.

Bill Maher was on about it being a police state after the bombing as well.

Thne Maher was just as wrong. "Police state" and "military occupation" along with words like "communism" are words that americans (and others) often throw around as if they were cliches with no real understanding with what those things ACTUALLY look like.
Should also note some further updates (my internet isn't great right now so I'm having troubles grabbing the links. I'll try to remember to update them later).
-story seems to be rounding out a bit about the older brother. It appears he had regular contact with a jihadist while in Russia. He also had contact with one of the canadian jihadists killed in africa who also happened to be a boxer. He seemed to be trying to use these two as the introduction he needed to become a full fledged member of these groups. When both these individuals were killed he lost that introduction and in a short day trip back to Russia not to long ago it seems he may have been turned away from the group (lacking the right people in his corner). Can't help but think he was going to prove something to these groups to get "in" with them.
-also smells to me like the parents while perhaps not jihad members had some sympathy to that cause. The mom seems extremely influential over the pair and the oldest brother.

BOSTON — The defense team representing the Boston Marathon bombing suspect got a major boost Monday with the addition of Judy Clarke, a San Diego lawyer who has managed to get life sentences instead of the death penalty for several high-profile clients, including the Unabomber and the gunman in the rampage that injured former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

So who's paying for these "elite" lawyers? Taxpayers, or are they doing it for free publicity? Do you need to blow up a public space to get a good lawyer in the US?

This SOB doesn't deserve to have life in prison, then he doesn't deserve his 50 virgins either

I'd be great with life imprisonment at a supermax with a 23 hour lockdown and an isolated hour in a cage for his outside time.
He won't be able to spread his message of hate, he'll have no hope, he'll hear the clock ticking. He'll have guards watching him 24 hours a day to make sure he doesn't take the easy route out.
Bad food, his parents won't be able to visit him, little sunlight, no laughing. Nobody cares if you cry, they'll supply you with a staff psychologist to keep you sane so you can experience every eternal minute of your loneliness.
This is what it feels like to be a terrorist scumbag traitor . . . forever.

My guess is that they'd be doing it for principled reasons. They're people oppossed to the death penalty. They take on cases that might result in the death penalty in order to set precedents against it.

I'm happy to see him get a life sentence. Feel the wrath of the full American justice system. Death would be the easy way out for this scumbag, which I'm sure his brother convinced him was a glorious and ecstatic privilege with plenty of virgins waiting for him.

Could be that they are against the death penalty and are willing to donate their time.
Or maybe they are doing it for free publicity, which, obviously, is a good thing. They take this case for free knowing that the name recognition alone will pay off in the end. They'll make a lot of money off it, and I can't imagine you have a problem with them doing that. It really is all that counts.

I've always thought that would be a misinterpretation of martyrdom if there is a god.
You arrive at the gates of paradise, and its not 72 nubile young virgins. Its one bitter 300 pound 72 year old virgin who's not giving her's up but she's willing to take the martyr's black cherry with a pineapple.

A lifetime of living in isolation/solitary confinement with 1 hour per day of recreation should drive him bonkers. He'll be wishing he killed himself
