Hey I'd like to block off almost all access to Sunnyside from Memorial, to pretty much eliminate the cut-through traffic we get. But I know there'd be insane resistance from residents to that, even though they complain about said traffic on the regular.

Also, props to the Roasterie for still existing. That place was around when I was a kid and all the weird hippies would sit outside. I am glad basically nothing has changed in that regard.

Inglewood is a lot easier to leave alone. Partially because it’s open enough that it never feels like a hassle. But mostly because they’re tearing all of it down to build Calgary’s absolutely favourite type of build: late-90-early-2000s-looking midrise condo buildings.
No need to make it better for foot traffic when all you have to do is remove all the shops people love to go to.

Living up the hill in the 90s, Kensington was a great place to hang out as a kid: comic shop and hockey card store across the street, ice cream parlour, that old funky wooden toy store, of course Riley Park. My mom and friends' mom would be at one of the 37 coffee shops while we wandered around, or we'd head down there by ourselves.
Honestly, I wouldn't let my kids wander down there now. I don't like wandering around Kensington on off hours now.

The best part is the memories. I remember as kids, this homeless guy stopped us one time; told us his name was Rainbow Man. Said he invented the internet, and than his initials were on each tree in the original Call of Duty game. He also owned the limousine in the Pretty Woman movie. Then he told us to wait there, he had to go withdraw $8,000 from the bank machine. He never came back.

Go big or go home. Do it right. Make it the pedestrian, walkable panacea that Calgary dreams of but can never accomplish.

Where would the 15000 vehicles a day that use 10th st be displaced to? Closing major roads only works if there are decent alternatives. 10th is one of the few entry points into down town and since you can't get from southbound 14th to Memorial that traffic then gets sent to 9th ave. Or people choose Centre st which is going to be even more of a disaster if the Green Line ever takes over large portions of that road. You basically make the Louise Bridge unable to be utilized well.

There were so many weirdos in Kensington back in the day, I miss all of them.

Sorry, "back in the day" while referencing Call of Duty, released in 2003? ####in' youngins...now I'm wondering if I am one of the "hippies' you referenced hanging out at The Roastarie.

Definitely weirdos from my teenage years, when you'd wander down 10th Street and through the neighborhoods and alleys. Hippies, artists, homeless folks, other roaming teenagers, you name it.
The Roasterie was the heart of the action

Kensington isn’t just coffee shops and restaurants. There are offices that need vehicle access for their clients.
There are tons of delivery vehicles who use those roads too.
I’d love to see car-free areas in the city but they need to be designed that way from the start. We have enough problems trying to shoehorn in bike lanes on established roads while still accommodating regular traffic.

There's back streets and alleys, they should work fine. Do trucks and delivery vehicles currently clog up 10th or Kensington Road right now?
Maybe start the cut-off at Gladstone Road so trucks can get into the Safeway, which is an anchor retail establishment for the area.
And if you're using office workers in Kensington as a counterpoint, I'd like to know how many office workers there are in Kensington per capita and what would suggest they have prioritized car necessities.
