Bennett as the #2 centre behind Backlund as the #1? Let Bennett give maximum effort and see where everything goes.
The hope next year should be that we lose as many games as possible while not committing any dollars long term. Benny on a 1-year deal, while Monahan is traded elsewhere gives us a 1-2 punch at centre that should help us land in the bottom-5.

You could qualify him and then sell him with salary retained for a decent pick.

That would be the absolute Flameiest thing ever done. Do nothing but piss and moan about guys that have "underperformed" then go out and qualify a player who has been the biggest underperformer in team history to a grossly overpriced contract, because of what could "potentially" be under Sutter - like we haven't heard this same bull#### under four other coaches. I think that would be the greatest display of incompetence in the history of team management and the breaking point for me.

Unless a team over pays for Bennett, you keep him. He shouldn't get a big contract but I still think he's a good third or fourth line guy that teams need. He isn't going to be your star player but teams need guys like him especially during a rebuild. He plays with heart and will stand up to anyone. The only reason he's underperforming at this point is because people still think he should produce like a top 6 player, the guy is a third/fourth liner and that's it. 2.5 mil isn't that big of a contract.

The Bennettdictines kill me. Always an excuse for this guy. Sam Bennett is a terrible hockey player. TERRIBLE. He does NOTHING above average, with the exception of be on the ice for goals being scored against his team. In that regard, he's one of the best in the league! Remove the Buffalo Sabres from the equation and he's a top 10 player in that regard. Beyond that, he does sweet #### all that contributes to actual measurable success.
And yes, $2.55M is a lot to pay for a guy that you can replace with a player at league minimum. The $1.85M you're over paying him actually pays for two more players just like him, with a little left over for the popcorn players of his skill level will consume during a season. So yeah, when you're actually properly running a hockey team, and its budget, overpaying a useless piece of crap is a pretty big deal. Especially when you're doing the same with Milan Lucic, but at an even greater scale or magnitude.

I'm starting to think you don't care for Sam Bennett.

He scored four goals in one game. You can’t let that kind of talent walk for free.

More of a ' round out the personal knowledge' question...
What are some tangible examples of a player who went from zero to hero after a trade?
Essentially struggled to perform close to what was expected based on draft, subsequently traded and turned it all around ?

I think Sutter likes him.
Not saying I would do it, that’s a tougher question for me.
I see good arguments on both sides.

No i get the Sutter angle and dont even disagree.
There is just no way they can pay him that much again though for what he provides...if he signs an extended deal at half the money or something, then sure. Great 3/4 line guy if for nothing other than his physicality and he is starting to look like he can PK.
Just keeping him on a QO though makes no sense and he would be UFA at the end of it I believe.

I’m intrigued.
What happens at this ‘breaking point’?

Robby Fabbri has been playing well for Detroit since the Blues traded him. Started his career well, struggled and then had regained his potential since being traded to Detroit.

Elias Lindholm. He wasn't a zero, but his numbers weren't much better than Bennett's rookie year (4x).
Fellow 4OA Benoit Pouliot went from less than zero to something after leaving MIN. Nothing hugely impressive, but enough to eventually land a 5x4M deal from the grease (LOL).
Olli Jokinen wasn't much in LAK or NYI...two more poor years in FLA before he figured it out...
Blake Wheeler (probably just depthed out in BOS).
Mika Zibanejad. Kyle Turris. Ryan Strome. Brett Connolly. Nino Niederreiter.
All of the above were viewed as disappointing top 6 picks at one time. Few became full blown heroes (at least not immediately), but all went on the show more than they did at their first home.
