Basically you are taking the top off a mountain and moving the rock into an adjacent valley. The rock underground has selenium in it so when the rock has been moved to the surface rain water leaches through the rocks drawing out selenium in dangerous concentrations.

Heathen!! Selenium is delicious and good for you!
At least thats what RFK says.

I asked Starbucks to mix some into my coffee but they were reluctant.

The chief executive of Atco Ltd. says discussions around Alberta secession are already hurting the investment climate.#
Nancy Southern said Asian partners in a major hydrogen project have said they won't make final investment decisions unless there is certainty around the Alberta separatism question.#
"There's just too many questions for them to be confident that they can move forward with large-scale investment decisions, and so I think the separatist discussion is very unhelpful and not constructive to Alberta," she said in an interview Wednesday following Atco's annual shareholder meeting in Calgary.#

Are there any tallies (estimates) on how much the UCP have cost Albertalonians (i've grown to detest the word Albertans when it spews from Darth Dani's lips, so inventing alternatives for citizens of AB) since they got back control of the province from the AB NDP (i.e. under Kenney & Dani)?

Colin Cooke et al in a 2022 paper concluded:
"Mining activities (e.g. blasting, coal processing, rail loading), exposure of coal deposits, and winds, all serve to generate fugitive dust. Emissions of fugitive dust result in poor air quality on and off site and expose mine workers and mining communities to pollutants associated with particulate matter (PM) such as polycyclic aromatics compounds (PACs). [ccsblog]
There are no viable solutions to stop the tide of selenium leaching into Canadian and U.S. water from a 100-kilometre stretch of coal mines owned and operated by mining giant Teck Resources. Deformed fish, a potential fish population collapse and contaminated drinking water signal more trouble to come. [narwhal]

I HATE GINA RINEHART;
I've always had a dream
I'd like to meet Gina
I'd punch her in the face
Yeah that would make me laugh
I'd like to kick her in the teeth
And then I'd take a picture of it
In lovely Ektachrome
And then I'd give it to Danielle

Yeah selenium from ERV has made the fish in surrounding rivers (including the Elk, which is world class fly fishing) pretty much inedible. I wouldn’t eat them. It’s also draining into Koocanusa polluting those waters which is a main hydration source for US farmers.
Having a coal mine in CNP would do the same to the crowsnest river that feeds into the oldman.
You can argue it would create jobs but the eco tourism would be highly affected, along with polluting anything downstream.

Australian metallurgical coal exports are forecast to peak in two years’ time and then decline out to the end of the decade. Canadian exports are already in decline.

This is a serious question. As our resident cynic, how do publications like the Narwhal stand up for truthiness? Are they considered factual and reliable? It seems like the inherent bias would be off the charts but I may just be swilling the O/G propaganda.
What are considered the best 'environmental' sources to learn more about this stuff?

Alberta Premier Smith shuffles cabinet, splits health portfolio
https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/arti...e-her-cabinet/
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced an overhaul of several government ministries, creating two new health services portfolios and replacing her Indigenous relations minister.
Former health minister Adriana LaGrange has been sworn in as minister of primary and preventative health services, while former jobs minister Matt Jones is in charge of hospital and surgical health services
looking at the full list, it's a head shaking list of the UCP "Best and Brightest". damn what a sad and motley crew

The Narwahl tends to link to sources in their publication so while the narrative will be biased they provide reliable sources for the claims being made. So Factual but biased.
For example the article I linked links to this report
https://www.teck.com/media/2014-Wate...T3.2.3.2.1.pdf
Which if you want to take a deep dive into the issue and the evidence you can.

Canadian non-profit news sites like The Narwhal and National Observer get nominated for the same awards, and employ some of the same journalists, as mainstream “legacy media.” They’re pretty reputable. I find The Tyee tends to editorialize quite a bit, but I think it’s otherwise good, honest journalism. Press Progress- obviously unapologetically progressive. Also good journalism.

You get to be a health minister, and you get to be a health minister! Everybody gets to be a health minister. Conservative government efficiencies at their finest. What are they up to now, four?
