There are definitely varying tastes and qualities depending on where you get meat from. Lilydale chicken has a weird texture and a specific taste. I don't like it, so pay more to get good tasting chicken from Master Meats. I think they are raised in Armstrong BC. I dunno, all I know is they taste a lot better and aren't that weird rubbery Lilyldale type. Maybe it's just a different breed.

Point is, if you want good tasting food, you can still get it, but you have to support the places that have it. I also understand their is nothing wrong with cheap food if you have a big family to feed or budget issues. If I had kids, I probably wouldn't be putting it on their plate just to watch half if it get tossed.

The other reality is we have almost everything available year round. To get that, sacrifices are required. Food needs to be stored longer, and transported farther. It's often picked early, which means it never reaches peak flavour. But if you buy stuff in season, it's still great.

It's good we have options, but they can't get around reality.

Ya, that sounds like stress poops. So now you need to consider why A&W gives you those. Presumably a reminder of some deep darkness from your past. Probably involved curly fries.

Tim Hortons is probably just because it's ass.

Different farms and in-season vs out definitely do make a difference, but they’ve also always made a difference. Like, oranges were still being imported in January 20 years ago, this isn’t a new thing. And like I said, buying off a farm you drove to is better than buying off a farm that drove thousands of kms to you.

Varieties can also make a difference. Honeycrisp is a 10/10 apple, but Red Delicious is animal feed. I think this also impacts perception and is the positive (negative?) aspect of greater selection: greater access to better stuff. So you may have grown up eating one thing, and then discover something better you didn’t have access to growing up. Then say you go back to the first thing, and realize it isn’t very good.

I remember Red Delicious being great apples when I was a kid. They were crunchy and juicy. Have they gotten horrible over the years or is it a false memory like thinking my uncle is cool when he was just drunk all the time?

Compared with 30 or 40 years ago, we have year-round access to an abundance of relatively cheap produce. And we have it because the produce has been bred for shipping, regularity, and longevity on the shelf. In many cases, that came at the cost of flavour. Most tomatoes on the shelf at Safeway don’t taste like much of anything.

Or take watermelons. You used to only be able to get them a few weeks of the year, they were huge and unwieldy, and full of black seeds you had to spit out. Now you can get them for half the year, they’re smaller and more convenient to store, they have no seeds - and their flavour is much weaker.

I will say it's definitely not possible at all that we're all getting older, most of you mixing in booze and cigars and whatnot, and those habits combined with the inexorable process of changes to our taste buds as we age lead to us believing things have changed since we were young? Are we possible the ones who are wrong? No it is the world who is wrong.

A&W did change their burgers dramatically from what they were in the 90s. They were juicy and perfectly seasoned and delicious, and now they're... well, I mean, they're not the worst fast-food burger, but they aren't what they were by any means.

My girlfriend has a shellfish allergy and carries an EpiPen. She’s also able to have food that’s been in the same fryer as shrimp, cross-contamination isn’t a worry there like it is for a real celiac. The only thing an EpiPen does for a celiac is weigh down their purse. It isn’t a competition; both suck ass, but it is way easier to get glutened by accident, and there’s nothing you can do to mitigate it when it does happen.
I have no idea what you're trying to say. I am making fun of people that think they're affected by gluten when they really have no idea because they've never actually been truly tested.

It is the World which is wrong and I demand that it immediately rectify this gross injustice to the food-eating people of this majestic globe we call home!!

Except the Celiacs. If bread is going to kill you then blindfold and cigarette and line 'em up in front of a ditch and throw buns at them until the deed is done.

RD apples are actually very hard to get right. They are very sensitive to soil conditions (all apple trees are, but RD especially so).

Seeded watermelons are still available.

Do you actually go out anywhere? Because they've been everywhere for weeks now.

It is entirely possible to get a flavourful seedless watermelon, but you have to know what you're doing.

Tomatoes have actually gotten much better over the decades. In general I'd say that produce has in general gotten much better over the years in terms of taste.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s down to people mixing booze and cigars as they get older

Here’s what a couple of scientists have to say on the matter. They’re probably boomers, though, so their observations should be taken with a grain of salt.

Quote:
Another explanation for loss of flavour is if fruit and veg is harvested before it has a chance to ripen or has been specially developed by growers not to go soft. This makes fruit and vegetable less likely to get damaged or spoil when transported long distances. The problem is, unripe produce lacks flavour, especially fruit, says Dr Meriel Jones, a lecturer in biochemistry and systems biology at Liverpool University. “The objective with ripening fruits is to attract animals to eat them, then excrete the seeds and distribute them around the landscape,” Dr Jones explains. “That’s why animals - including humans - like sweet soft fruit.” But if fruit is picked before it ripens, the compounds that make it taste and smell good don’t develop.

Loss of flavour can also be a side effect when growers prioritise characteristics. For example, some tomatoes and strawberries are bred to produce lots of very large fruit. “These traits inherently run counter to flavour,” says Harry Klee, professor of horticultural sciences at the University of Florida. “As yield increases, it eventually surpasses the capacity of the plant to fill the fruit with nutrients, which are precursors to flavour. Sugar and nutrient content are diluted out across all the fruits on the plant, and you end up with more water and less flavour per fruit.”

What an interesting way to focus on the wrong part and ignore that we literally lose taste buds as we age. Classic I love it.

i think it’s mostly food preparation. Most unseasoned food sucks and tastes bland.
