I wouldn't say Croatia put in more effort when they didn't try to score until they had to.

I think they practice those a lot! Almost a team strategy in setting up the next shooter. Put a couple down the middle, and make the keeper freeze a bit and then go to the corners.

Girly said it, but being negative actually takes a lot of effort, gotta get every block in and win every loose ball. Brazil really didn't have too many Grade A chances outside the goal. Croatia played a nearly perfect, if horrible to watch, match.

Sitting in Zagreb. Unfortunately just got in 20 minutes before the game so could only watch it in the hotel. Fireworks outside after the win. Going to head out in a bit.

Let's stop calling strong defensive efforts "negative".
Are Sutter hockey teams negative? Should everyone play run & gun like the Oilers?
Croatia played very hard and got the result, that's all.

As a neutral observer I had fun watching that shootout, however I really dislike critical sports events that are decided by a random skills competition.
Why dont they make the extra time sudden death at the very least?

So here's the weird thing about England. I actually like the team and the players. It's their fans that are hot trash and make me want them to lose. So mixed bag from me.
lol. Replays of ####ing Brazilian goal after they lose.

Not a great comparable, you couldn't sit back for a whole hockey game like you can in football. Just dropping all five guys behind the blue line to get peppered would never work.

Worth watching two hours of next to nothing just to see that Neymar goal. Thing of beauty.

If you make extra time longer, players will die from exhaustion, and teams will not even try to attack anymore.
Also watching penalties is fun. If you want to learn sports psychology, watch the players close up. You can pretty much know if they will score or f up the shot.

I would've preferred Brazil win, but I also dislike criticism of defensive football. Sure it can be boring but no team is under an obligation to entertain neutrals. The goal is to win so you play to your strengths.

Tbh you don't really have a choice but to defend Brazil that way. If you play in a more traditional 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, you get exposed, as a press doesn't really work on them. They're too good with the ball. Even in one of those formations you're gonna end up dropping behind the ball. (And actually I didn't even see what Croatia was playing today, but they definitely had their striker isolated one on three or four up top many times once they won the ball back in their own half).

For awhile, they did use the "golden goal" rule in in knockout and final games but ultimately this rule got reversed because most fans/purists didn't like it and supposedly made extra time even more defensive and conservative.

After the treatment of Borjan and some of their fans chants, I really wanted Croatia to go home. Too bad Brazil chokes once again.
