Not even because they’d have to now replace Lucic in the line up with some other roster player. So it’s buyout cost + replacement and league minimum is upwards of $700k.
That is indeed why his contract is essentially buy out proof.

There is really no argument that Johnny is the best offensive player available for the Flames. There isn’t someone else that is even close
The only question is if they can win the playoffs with him. This past playoff gave us a hint that he can.

Why not? As long as we don't have an ECHL goalie in net.

Imagine if that Kadri deal had gone through. There's the 1-2 punch right there according to that chart.

I didn't say the Flames were going to do it, I said they should do it.
And goddamn rights they should.
Sharks got rid of Kane's contract on trumped up charges that were never substantiated and used that money to extend a key core player.
Flames should be playing dirty too.
If Lucic wants to retire, but still wants his money, the more realistic scenario that will happen is he goes on LTIR though.
|
With Treliving running things, I don't think the Flames have ever done anything that is even close to the line of "playing dirty". As an organization under Treliving, it seems like the Flames have consistently operated by the rules, not taking advantages of any gray areas. I'm actually okay with them continuing to run the organization this way.

Flames can't afford to screw around players like LA and San Jose. Calgary isn't a desired destination and has to at the very least maintain a high level of professionalism, treating players with as much class as possible to maintain it as one of their few selling points when trying to compete in free agency or keep their own players from leaving.

Matthew would have the Flames buying 7 UFA years after going for 0.89ppg over 431 games. Does he want $3M per more for that production?

If you based all future contracts on the Brady Tkachuk, there would be a ton of guys making the maximum LOL.

You know, you're probably 100% right but it's frustrating as hell watching other teams continually get away with the crap they pull.
I mean we just got burned directly by it.
San Jose should still be dealing with the $7 million cap hit they had for Kane. Instead, it's gone and they used that cap space to easily extend Hertl.
Meanwhile, the oilers are allowed to sign Kane, while they were circling the drain and looking like they'd miss the playoffs, to a fricken pro rated $2.1 AAV contract and the guy puts up 22 goals in 43 games (40 goal pace) and has so far scored 12 goals in 12 playoff games.
It's absolutely sickening to me.

Agreed and the other thing is they don't have time to eff around.
Make your best offer immediately.
If they say no, you no what you are dealing with and you start to execute a plan against that reality.
If you fart around, you delay getting that clarity.
you need to know early in the off-season where you are at.

Did anyone catch the "8 year" bit? Johnny said something along the line of being here for another 8 years. Probably doesn't mean anything, but for whatever reason, that just kind of felt like a significant tell.
I mean, for instance, if he only wanted to go out east, an 8 year deal isn't even on the table, so he could only look at 7. So maybe in Johnny's mind, perhaps he's already accepted the idea that he'd be willing to re-sign for 8 years which is half the battle. So perhaps it's maybe just the number that has to be met.
Brad Treliving's penny pinching is very well documented here, so maybe it's
a little hard for him to look at 8 figures annually without cringing a little bit. So I wouldn't be surprised to hear Treliving trying his best to get Gaudreau's camp to sign at discounted rate.

Well not necessarily penny pinching in the derogatory sense, meant it as a compliment, as in his use of leverage to sign his players to cheaper than expected deals.
