Those older guys will be looking at term for their final contract I would think. I doubt they would want short in case they take a step back and can't get another contract.

Ehrhoff is being paid roughly a million dollars per year by the Sabres until 2028.
He doesn't need a long term contract.

Further to SureLoss' point on Ehrhoff being paid long term due to his buyout - these guys listed are older and are in the second tier of free agent D - they won't be commanding long term deals, barring a desperate team ponying up term to lure a player

We have a plethora of forwards that are nhl ready or are going to be nhl ready. Gotta give up quality for quality. Lets land us a good young defenceman with colborne! If not beaulieu, who would you be happy with??

I'm with Dissentowner. Rather not trade Joe.
Of course then obvious question is whom then.

I agree that I'd rather not trade him but Colborne for Beaulieu is a homerun for us.

Beaulieu is entering his 4th pro season and has yet to establish himself at the nhl level. Why is it a home run?

Must be buried behind all that d depth they have...
Beulieu doesn't impress me. Not even close enough to give up Colborne.

Well he is a defenseman, it's not unheard of at all for them to take awhile. He's their best young up and coming defender, ask any Montreal fan.
EDIT: And looking at his career stats it took him two seasons until he was an NHL regular, hardly unheard of.

Even though I likely have not seen him play the fact he was a first at one time so he must be good! Duh! So a home run!

I think next season will decide whether Colborne will be a long term player for the Flames. He was underwhelming during this past regular season but the playoffs he up'ed his game to a new level we all haven't seen before. He has size, hands, foot speed and just starting to develop his physical game as we seen in the playoffs. He just needs to be more consistent.
I think it was in a interview that Burke wanted Colborne to emulate his style around David Backes...

Doesnt have to impress you. Hes a good young defenseman. Will still be 22 years old when the upcoming season starts, big 6" 1 and 1/4 200 pound d-man. I love colborne just as much as the next guy, makes sense for montreal to get a big forward back. Fits the age frame of their team, and beaulieu fits age frame for us. Im not the best a projecting talent but i believe he will be good. Still very young and needs playing time

His concussion issues mean he could be done.

Gotta say I disagree. I take Russell or Wideman ahead of Ehrhoff 10 times out of 10 and it's not even close. Ehrhoff always has been and always will be overrated in my books. He's bottom pairing on this team.

Report out of Russia that Sobotka has informed his KHL team he will stay for another year.
He had until June to us his NHL-out clause.

That is an under-sized defenseman in the NHL these days.
Flames would be dumb to trade Colborne at the moment. He has the size and the tools to be a top end talent. He really showed a great progression throughout the season and playoffs. He's a guy you sit on, especially when he can play the puck possession game so well and can score off the rush. Colborne is turning into a very good player for today's NHL. You don't give up on that at this point. If the Flames are really interested in going after a young defenseman they could do so by moving out Raymond or Bollig and adding one of our seconds as a sweetener. If I were targeting Montreal I'd rather go after Tinordi, who is a 6'6" 225 monster. We could use that size on our blue line.
