The Lane MacDermid situation got a little clearer. He's officially filed his retirement papers, according to Craig Conroy. #Flames

Conroy told us MacDermid had lost his passion to play, so is moving on from his hockey career. #Flames

NCAA and junior kids can sign ATOs with Abby to play in the playoffs.

Frees up an extra professional contract once he files?

Let's hope for that. Frozen Four and playoff reinforcements for the Heat.
they would play under a tryout agreement and they would sign for July 1st.

It should. He would no longer be playing and so his contract becomes null.

That's how it worked with Kovalchuk. Soon as the papers were filed he was out of his contract and NJ got the money and roster spot immediately.

I think it was touched on before, but the heat watchers like yourself could probably answer: Would they even get a chance to play?

Tough to say. Gaudreau would for sure. No question about that. You can't keep a talent like that out of the lineup. The Flames would mandate him to play. I reckon the same could be said for Poirier.

As for guys like Arnold, Agostino, Kulak, Culkin, and Gordon... I would imagine it would be completely up to Ward on whether or not they deserve or have worked hard enough in practice to get into the lineup.

Usually in the last couple games of the season Ward will throw guys like this into the lineup to see how they do (and see if he'll give them playoff time).

I think you'd definitely want to give Gaudreau and Arnold a cup of coffee on a line together for a couple games. Put them with someone with some size and hands and see if they can bring some of that chemistry to the pros.

Gaudreau-Arnold-Ferland is a line I'd like to see next year.

Nothing against Arnold but his path to the NHL is going to see him separated from Gaudreau. Its great that he's been able to succeed in college with him, but in the pros Gaudreau is going to be a top six or bust guy and Arnold is going to likely be a bottom six defensive guy. You could likely put a broomstick on a line with Gaudreau this year and he'd put up points.

If I could photoshop the name Kevin Hayes onto a broom stick we'd all have a laugh

HA! A piston or some sort of plunger.

Gaudreau and Arnold have only really been line mates for about a year now.

In 2011-12, Arnold had 36 points in 42 games played (0.857 PPG), and Gaudreau was only involved in 4 of them.

Last season, Arnold had 35 points in 38 games total (0.921 PPG), but wasn't on the same line as Gaudreau until the final 6 games. In the first 32 games of the year, he had 28 points (0.875 PPG) and Gaudreau was only involved in 1. They were finally put together on March 8 last year, and Arnold had 7 points in the final 6 games last year. Gaudreau was involved in 6 of them.

This season, they've been line mates since day one, and Arnold has 44 points in 33 games (1.33 PPG). Gaudreau has points on 36 of those same goals.

Obviously, playing on the same line as Johnny has greatly boosted Arnold's stats, but he was putting up solid numbers even before they were put together (he was also a 0.51 PPG in his freshman year, before Gaudreau even got to Boston).

Agreed.

Gaudreau would get worked into the lineup immediately - not much doubt about that.

The other guys would be mostly playoff-depth. But in a long playoff run, there are plenty of injuries and opportunities. No doubt one or two of those guys would work their way into a regular spot.

Arnold is probably very comparable to Knight in talent, style of game, size, etc. Pretty good chance he could eventually work his way into a regular shift.

Poirier too, probably.

I would think the rest would be depth.

Don't count Agostino out. The kid is averaging 5 shots on goal per game. It's insane. It's too bad his team is so brutal.

Kulak got in 4 games with the Heat last season, so it will be interesting who gets playing time. Some (Coda Gordon?) may join the Heat to see if they warrant a pro contract.

Good thing the Heat added Gillies... his zero fights really added a lot.
