How far into the contract would a buyout be possible?
Buyout does absolutely nothing, virtually no savings because he’s getting mostly signing bonuses, just another cherry on top from Brad Treliving. That’s why no other GM should touch this contract with a 10 foot pole, it has all the makings to be the worst contract in NHL history if performances don’t change.
People having a hard time understanding guarantees contracts? It's pretty black and white.
No person would ask to be terminated because they are having a tough time.
If you thought he was being paid for future production that's your own fault, it was clear when he signed that it was based on prior production and we could probably get 3 good years production wise from the deal. I don't think anyone saw this coming but it is what it is.
This is why we have lockouts.
Oliver Kylington would disagree, while not terminated he’s collecting his cheques without any signs of rejoining the team and not counting towards the cap hit.
This is the ideal scenario for Huberdeau, assuming the 115 point player is never coming back.
I only WISH that the issue with Huberdeau was his work ethic. That's fixable, especially when he has a long track history of having a high work ethic.
After the Flames deal the rumoured players away, I would imagine their focus will shift from "win games" to "develop players". I think a focus can be put on rebuilding Huberdeau back up.

Media will be on him after the new year, its pretty embarrassing at this point. He is one of the laughing stocks of the NHL right now.
I wonder how many tiny violins $114M Canadian buys.
He could use them to build a fort around his locker, and force Aaron Vickers and Wes Gilbertson shout their fierce cross-examinations up at him like King
Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

LOL. The average person even in Calgary wouldn’t know Huberdeau from the next guy in line at the grocery store. And for those that do, most wouldn’t care.
Plus, you are talking about 7 years of a guy’s life. For $73 million. no one is giving that up for a sour look once in a while.
The Huberdeau problem is certainly not his work ethic. Theres tons of times hes out there trying.. he just sucks.

While I don't think work ethic is the main problem, I also don't watch him and think he is a player busting his ass every night. I don't see what other people see when they say at least he is working hard.
He is watching the game most of the time, like a cat watching ping pong, then will give a little burst of energy once in a while if an opportunity comes his way, but he isn't someone who is constantly pressuring opponents. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Nikolai Zherdev (possibly the laziest skilled player ever), and 10 being someone like Blake Coleman, I would rank Huberdeau around a 3 or 4 most of the time, and 5 on his best nights. A 3 or 4 probably wouldn't be too unusual for a lot of players who got by their whole career on rare skill and ability, but doesn't cut it for most players and looks bad when you aren't producing points at least.
I think the fact that objective 3rd party fans with no skin in the game, think Huberdeau is on the lazy side, says something. Even Florida fans used to complain about his inconsistent effort back when he was at least productive.

I know the Huberdeau supporters will vehemently disagree with a benching, but I do think at this time it serves two purposes.
The first point can be a coaching tactic where they ask him to view the game from a different perspective. It’s another tool in the toolbox and can be leveraged as a teaching opportunity. Will the player and fans see it that way? Probably not, but this wouldn’t be the first time a star player has been scratched and asked to watch from the press box. Well undoubtedly it would be viewed as a negative by Huberdeau, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that but rather another attempt to try and get some production out of him. Just to be clear, scratching him isn’t a long-term solution and this would only be feasible for a game or two.
Secondly, it’s about accountability. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s hard to send a message to other players justifying their absence from the lineup when you continuously play a guy who is severely underperforming. Sure, they’ve made minor adjustments like demoting him down the lineup and giving him less PP time, but you can’t continue to set the precedence that he’s above the team due to contract value and previous star status. If you are serious about entertaining a rebuild/re-tool, then you need to ensure that everyone knows there is a standard to be adhered to regardless of who you are in the lineup.
Ultimately how Huberdeau responds is on him. It doesn’t appear that he answers well to adversity as evidenced by his comments regarding the trade to Calgary and/or his relationship with Darryl last year when things got tough. BUT you hope at some point he realizes that this isn’t just about him and where he stands in the lineup, but rather accountability and the expectation that comes with his contract.
It’s completely justifiable to bench a guy who leads the team in +/- and hasn’t scored a point in all of December despite making over 10 million dollars. Let’s not kid ourselves here that it would be out of the realm to sit a guy in this situation regardless of past accomplishments or the name on the back of the jersey. While I don’t question his work ethic or desire to win, it’s becoming painfully obvious that it’s time to try something new once again.

This is true, outside the 115 point anomaly he's always been inconsistent. He could go MIA for a month but at least he would still be collecting garbage points even though you barely noticed him. Probably going though one of those stretches this month.
That’s exactly what I’m saying, LTIR Huberdeau for mental health issues. Wouldn’t be a huge stretch to sell him as mentally unfit for duty and have a shrink work closely with him for the next 7.5 years to get him healthy again.
