The more I think about this trade, the more I think the deal isn't all that great. Huberdeau is awesome, but he's 5 years from where Tkachuk is and another 5 years where he'll be past his prime. Weegar is a puck moving d-man but no, you have Kylington - both are around the same size at 6'0". Small d-men gets you nowhere in the playoffs. This trade only buys you 1 year to try and sign both of these guys before they hit free agency. It's almost like buying time to sign or trade Tkachuk situation. It's like the Flames just gave the Panthers a gifted rugged winger in return for 2-players to think about keeping or losing next year! Sure, there's another prospect and a conditional 1st in 2025 but it'll likely be a low 1st round draft pick that gets traded away anyways. Wished the Flames would've gone for the lottery sweepstakes instead.

All of this seems to ignore the fact that Tkachuk was walking for nothing in one year. What do you mean lottery sweepstakes?

Weegar is NOT a small Dman .

He is 20+ pounds bigger than Kylington and plays an aggressive and physical game.

Despite the age Huberdeau skates far better than Tkachuk.

Weegar, 1st, prospect

Also, Tkachukx8 wasn't an option for the Flames...they traded 1 year of 9M Tkachuk

Points Over the last four years:

Huberdeau: 346, +38
Gaudreau: 321, +74
Tkachuk: 285, +73

Note, Tkachuk and Gaudreau would be much closer to Huberdeau’s +38 without their extreme outlier +54 and +64 last year.

Huberdeau assumes Gaudreau’s role in the offense, and I would be far more comfortable with a 6 ft 1 200lb player in that spot, instead of a 5 ft 8 160 lb one.

So take a worse return so the Flames are worse or which of St Louis and Carolina do you think will implode over the next two years?
Treliving turned one very valuable UFAs into two valuable UFAs. I think there is zero chance they let both walk for free.

Huberdeau is not a good skater. I'd say he is worse than Tkachuck, certainly not better.

so perhaps this has already been mentioned, but so far in his career matty has been a guy who has produced .886 points per game. take away last eyars careeer season and he is .8 ppg

in 27 career playoff games he has 15 points. 12 of those games and 110 of those points were from last season

i also dont see tkachuk as a great skater and i feel like this will really be more obvious in the east

I feel the opposite. The more I reflect, the more I love this. Tre pulled a massive haul for Weeger and Huberdeau, a 99.9% return of big difference making assets vs. the sweepstakes of a less than 20% chance at Bedard.

Also, should neither want to sign, both who can be flipped at the deadline, where I'd think Weegar can be sold for a 1st (see Chiarot trade) and Hubs for multiple assets including a promising prospect, 1st and possibly a roster player.

You think about the potential that we have here:

a) Both players are huge impact players and we left off or a slightly below (or even ahead if Mangi further develops and Monahan is suddenly back to old form) where we were.

b) We flip both of them and some how turned Tkachuk into at least 3 first rounders, multiple prospects, etc.

This to me is the hockey gods back on our side after JG

Tkachuk has also had pretty easy playoff matchups vs Hubedeau. No Dallas, Winnepeg, or Edmonton in that division when it comes to playoff points

Who is this magical team that's giving the Flames a 2023 unprotected lottery pick for 1 year of Tkatchuk?

This seems like an insane take. Huberdeau was routinely penciled in as a Team Canada first liner with McDavid, and he can't skate?

From my viewings of Huberdeau, I would say he has such great all-around talent that no one aspect really stands out. He seems plenty fast to me, but not McDavid fast. Great puck handler/passer, but not the same kind of magician Johnny is.

He is a line driver though. He is the focus, notwithstanding he is a winger. It will be fascinating to see what Bennett does without him, because I do think he benefitted greatly from playing with Huberdeau.

It's a good sign that every post against the trade has ridiculous misinformation

Flames traded 1x9M Tkachuk

Huberdeau is a way better skater...laughable to suggest otherwise

They aren't losing both for nothing

2023 lottery pick wasn't available

Tkachuk has unreal hands...he is one of the worst skaters in the league

Lol, I watched the guy since he entered the league. He's never been a good skater. That's why he doesn't carry the puck up the ice a la Gaudreau, it was always Barkov/Trocheck/Bennett in Florida.

Man, first the Weegar take, and now the Huberdeau take. Are we sure you're watching the right NHL players that we traded for?

Have you watched Tkachuk? Since that was the comparison.

^^^Gaudreau HAS to be a magician - he’s 160 lbs.

Huberdeau can stick his ass out and protect the puck. He doesn’t need to shape shift out of every possible contact situation.

Based on the highlights I’ve been watching, his edge work is exactly what you expect from an elite player.

He’s graceful, not plodding - we’ll have to see what his straight line speed is like, but that’s one of the least important elements of being a great hockey player, or even a great skater.

I come back to what Jagr told Treliving all the time “lots of guys get to the wrong places quickly. I go to the right places.”

If you listened to Treliving's press conference though, this package was far and away the best value return out there. Calgary can still go the lottery sweepstakes route, by flipping Huberdeau and Weegar - if they flip them to places where they will sign long term contracts, I figure Huberdeau could fetch 2 first + prospect and Weegar for 1 first + lower pick + prospect, or something like that. That basically makes the Tkachuk trade getting the equivalent of ~4 first round picks + 4 prospects/lower picks which surely you'd agree is an exceptional return for any player. There's no way they get that return just by trading Tkachuk directly for a package of futures. While I think it's pretty unlikely for them to go the rebuilding route, it's still there as an option and even if you preference is to tear down and go for a lottery pick this next year, you still do this deal every time.
