‘Don’t have the president call’: Arizona official ignored Trump attempts to sway results, report says

Quote:
The records — including voicemails and text messages — shed light on another state where Trump, his attorneys and others mounted a behind-the-scenes pressure campaign on Republican officials overseeing elections. Days before Congress certified Biden's win on Jan. 6, Trump pressed Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to find enough votes to overturn Biden's win there.

Trump tried to reach Clint Hickman, then the chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, on Jan. 3, shortly before midnight in Washington and hours after news broke of Trump's call with Raffensperger. Trump tried to reach Clint Hickman, then the chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, on Jan. 3, shortly before midnight in Washington and hours after news broke of Trump's call with Raffensperger.

“Hello, sir. This is the White House operator I was calling to let you know that the president’s available to take your call if you’re free,” the White House operator said in a voicemail. “If you could please give us a call back, sir, that’d be great. You have a good evening.”
Quote:
“I had seen what occurred in Georgia and I was like, ‘I want no part of this madness and the only way I enter into this is I call the president back.’”

The Arizona calls, discovered via a Freedom of Information Act request, came as Trump backers like Rudy Giuliani and the state GOP chairman were pressing for an investigation into Arizona’s election results, which officials of both parties had already certified as free and fair.

If you're a bunch of cowardly white supremacists Philly is not a good choice to have a rally.

Wait, is Trump back to holding rallies? I hadn't heard from him in a long time.

Looks like the GOP strategy for 2022 is to just keep pushing Trump's lies about the last election. This will no doubt work on the hardcore MAGA nutjobs, but will this actually win them back the Senate?

I suppose they're putting all their money on the recent spate of voter suppression bills that have been passed in all the GOP-controlled swing states. What a broken country.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...37d_story.html

Quote:
Across the country, as campaigns gear up for a handful of key races this year and the pivotal 2022 midterms, Republican candidates for state and federal offices are increasingly focused on the last election — running on the falsehood spread by Trump and his allies that the 2020 race was stolen from him.

While most of these campaigns are in their early stages, the embrace of Trump’s claims is already widespread on the trail and in candidates’ messages to voters. The trend provides fresh evidence of Trump’s continued grip on the GOP, reflecting how a movement inspired by his claims and centered on overturning a democratic election has gained currency in the party since the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

Dozens of candidates promoting the baseless notion that the election was rigged are seeking powerful statewide offices — such as governor, attorney general and secretary of state, which would give them authority over the administration of elections — in several of the decisive states where Trump and his allies sought to overturn the outcome and engineer his return to the White House.
Quote:
Of the nearly 700 Republicans who have filed initial paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run next year for either the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives, at least a third have embraced Trump’s false claims about his defeat.

Many of them — 136 — are sitting members of Congress who voted against Joe Biden’s electoral college victory on Jan. 6.

Similarly, of the nearly 600 state lawmakers who publicly embraced Trump’s false claims, about 500 face reelection this year or next. Most of them signed legal briefs or resolutions challenging Biden’s victory.

At least 16 of them attended the Jan. 6 protest in Washington.

“What’s really frightening right now is the extent of the effort to steal power over future elections,” said Jena Griswold, the Democratic secretary of state in Colorado. “That’s what we’re seeing across the nation. Literally in almost every swing state, we have someone running for secretary of state who has been fearmongering about the 2020 election or was at the insurrection. Democracy will be on the ballot in 2022.”

Outrage against the party in control often wins mid-term elections in the US. Motivated turnout vs apathy for the party in control. The whole Trump dynamic super charged motivation on both sides so will be interesting with him out of the picture what happens.

Less than an hour after the event, Trump's team began sending out fundraising appeals related to the lawsuits. The website recruiting participants for the proposed class action suits also featured a link to donate, and the Republican National Committee sent out a fundraising appeal invoking the suit as well.

Sounds like he "filed" in the wrong jurisdiction (Florida instead of Cali), so it'll just be thrown out immediately. Gotta milk those funds. He and his are massively impressive grifters.

This is all exponentially worse than anything Nixon did.

Carl, going back to the Georgia tapes:

It's hilarious that the far-right MAGA dips**ts chose such a loser of a human being as their lord and saviour. Dude lost the popular vote twice, lost the Senate, lost the presidency, got 500,000 Americans killed due to his disastrous and idiotic Covid response, incited a failed insurrection, bilked his supporters out of their hard earned money, and is under investigation for all kinds of illegal shenanigans.

Yup, he's the one we want to worship. That's our guy!
