Hot take: Pixar is still living off their brilliant earlier films and their formula of quippy dialog with a heartwarming ending is starting to get stale.
I’m keen to see if Soul stopped trend because Onward sure didn’t. Looking at Pixar’s previous 10 films, from Brave to Onward, I only consider Inside Out and Coco to be amazing.

Amazing is a pretty high bar. There aren’t any clunkers in that group of 10 movies (which is very sequel heavy) and I’d say all of them were high quality family entertainment.
Coco is my favorite of that group. Looking forward to Soul in the next couple of days.
Location: A simple man leading a complicated life....

Tonight it was "American History X"
Quote:
Derek Vinyard (EDWARD NORTON, Rounders, Primal Fear), the charismatic leader of a group of young white supremacists, lands in prison for a brutal, hate-driven murder. Upon his release, ashamed of his past and pledging to reform, Derek realizes he must save his younger brother, Danny (EDWARD FURLONG, ######), from a similar fate. A groundbreaking controversial drama about the tragic consequences of racism in a family, American History X also stars Fairuza Balk, Elliot Gould, Stacy Keach, and Beverly D'Angelo.
My wife and I watched an hour of Soul and neither of us feel super inclined to watch the rest. I just find the main character very unlikeable, and the whole body swap thing is played out.
It's also not particularly funny and I'm not nearly as impressed with the animation as I was with Toy Story 4.
I think Pixar needs to cut down on the number of movies they're pumping out, the quality has been pretty hit or miss since they started aiming for two movies a year.

The quality in what regards? The animation is only getting better which each release, and the stories are not being rushed or mass-produced.
Soul was written and directed by Pete Docter, who last wrote and directed Inside Out in 2015, and Up in 2009 before that.
I'm surprised to hear you disliked it so much as it seems to be getting rave reviews everywhere (96% critics and 90% audience scores on RT, which average ratings of 8.3 and 8.72 respectively as well).
As was mentioned earlier I don't think it's a child-oriented Pixar movie, but I don't see that as a negative personally, but could see how it might be different than what you'd expect coming into it.
I liked the first 10 minutes of Soul. Then he died and it got a bit muddled. Some of his character swings were so fast and drastic that it defied my suspension of disbelief.
At least it was pretty much 100% apolitical, which stunned me.

I guess I didn’t actively dislike it, it seemed fine? But I’d seen all the rave reviews first so had really high expectations and it’s just kind of... meh.
And I would disagree on the animation getting better. The animation of Onward and Soul are a clear step down from Toy Story 4. In the last decade + 1 (2010 - 2020) they’ve release 13 movies and I’d say only 3 of those have been the ‘magical’ Pixar writing and story telling wise (Toy Story 3, Inside Out, Coco). Some fun sequels and good movies still, but Disney Animation proper in particular caught up fast this decade to where the two are basically the same level to me now.
We watched Soul tonight and I loved it. Definitely not targeted to the same audience as Cars, and won’t be selling many toys from this one no. But I don’t think Pixar should be stuck targeting the exact same demographic for very movie.
I thought it was a beautiful film. For families, singles or couples at many different stages of life.

I didn't start watching the new season of The Mandalorian right away since I just didn't have time, and then I figured I'd just wait until the season was done and start binging. Just finished the first episode and damn was that awesome, between RotJ and KOTOR that was some nostalgia overload, absolutely loved it. If this is a sign of what the rest of the season is going to be I'm stoked
Nah, that is still the best episode of season 2. The rest are mostly good though.
If you haven't seen The Clone Wars it might be worthwhile to watch the last 4 episodes of that before going any further. They take place during Revenge of the Sith.

Just watched a 2018 movie called Hot Air, starring Steve Coogan, Taylor Russell, Skylar Astin, Neve Campbell, and Judith Light, among others. Coogan is a right-wing radio talk show host feuding with his ex-partner, when his 16-year old niece comes to town to stay with him.
At times utterly predictable, at times not, and with a corny ending, but Coogan gives a rant that doesn't hit the same level as Jeff Daniels on the Newsroom but is still fun to watch.
Apparently down-rated by many right-wingers as they feel it is an attack on them, but I quite liked it, not least of which was some very good performances by Coogan and Russell. And the biggest idiot in the was the left-wing senator, who seemed an analogy for AOC anyway.

I just watched the first episode last night and it was excellent. What an inspired piece of casting for the Marshall. You knew it as soon as you heard the voice.
I’m not a huge Star Wars buff, never having watched the cartoons or read any books so I didn’t have the same nostalgia reaction. But that was a fun episode of TV.

Timothy Olyphant has now played a Marshall in 4 series: Deadwood, Justified, Fargo, and The Mandalorian.
