Denis just dropped the first set to Medvedev by a 6-3 score. Way too many unforced errors from Shapo in that opening set.

Shapo looking much better in this 2nd set as he races out to a 3-0 lead. TSN2 is showing Murray vs. Edmund, thus my tennis tv subscription is coming in handy.

Going to a 3rd and deciding set as Denis wins set 2 6-1. Medvedev isn't moving very well out there, I don't think there's an injury, he just looks very disinterested.

I think Denis is wondering why Medvedev isn't being called for taking way too long to serve (i.e. he definitely is exceeding the 25 second serve clock). A heated discussion with the umpire just transpired.

There are only 4 wildcards

Shapo now serving for the match up 5-4 (was down 4-1 in this 3rd set).
Edit: Wins the match serving the game out at love. Wasn't a vintage performance, but was pretty gritty.

Unfortunately, Peter lost a close match to Michael Mmoh last night. Set scores were 7-5 7-6. Denis will play Kei Nishikori today in Washington weather permitting.

Interesting matchup as Shapo and Kei were practicing together right before this event.

This start time is optimistic and I don't know if TSN2 will be showing this match...Other TSN channels will be dedicated to showing CFL action tonight.

Just watching the John Isner - Noah Rubin match and Rubin blew out one of his shoes (he almost completely detached the sole from the main body of the shoe). Isner was laughing, but Rubin looked pissed lol.

Looking forward to the battle of the Zverev brothers coming up next.
Edit: Younger brother prevails in straight sets 6-3 7-5

Well, Denis just lost to Nishikori in straight sets 7-6(1) 6-3. That's seven straight tie-breakers that Shapo has lost dating back to May (that needs to get rectified). He needs to start serving better as well as he's not getting enough free points. The crowd in DC was sparse and quiet and didn't get Denis any extra energy tonight either.

Andy Murray was playing past 3 am DC time this morning, won the match, and might withdraw to preserve his overall health.

There are a lot of red flags starting to show in his game that are concerning as they are not going away. He now hasn't won a match against a player within the top 30 since May. Denis needs to get his technique sorted out sooner than later as this slump is turning into the norm with double faults and low first serve % seemingly the story in every loss. Returning so poorly against a ho-hum server like Nishikori is also concerning to me.
I'm still hopeful he can be the top ten player he seems poised to be, but I'm starting to think a coaching change may be necessary to turn things around if this continues on throughout the hardcourt swing.

birth date: April 15, 1999. let's start getting worried about lack of progress maybe when he at least hits Zverev's ripe old age of 21. unless we think he's a generational player that should be pushing for slams by the time he leaves his teens, then I'm not going to be the least bit worried about inconsistent results for at least the next couple of seasons.

Tennis doesn't work that way though. Progress needs to remain positive in young players or things can be derailed permanently. Look no further than guys like Coric or Gasquet as examples of highly touted players that fell off the board after struggles that turned lengthy at younger ages.
If Denis' staff isn't moving him forward they need to be replaced or he can easily end up as a ruined talent instead of potential top player for years to come. No one is saying this is the case, but if this turns into a trend for the rest of the 2018 it will need to be addressed.

Watching Shapo last night, he was really bringing some heat on his first serve (the radar gun hit 130 MPH a couple of times). The only bad part was very few of those serves were landing in the service box. With him being left-handed, I would advise him to take some MPH off and swing his opponent way out of court (especially in the ad court) and try to end the point quickly with a volley to the opposite court. Speaking of his volleys, it's still a part of his game that could use some improvement.

He was smoking it because Nishikori is one of the best returners in the game.
On the other hand, Denis winning only 5/20 of Kei's 2nd serve points in unacceptable.
