If you're willing to go a bit past the city limits, Flores & Pine in Bearspaw (used to be the Bears Den) is pretty great.

Amaido used to have a brick and mortar location on 2nd Ave in Chinatown where you could go in and buy doughnuts on a whim, but they closed it last year.
Their mochi doughnuts are pretty meh. Not worth the price or hassle, IMO

They opened a new brick and mortar spot (around the corner, on Centre Street). You can walk in on a whim and still order, just can't guarantee all the flavours will be there. At least that was the case the last time I went a couple months ago.

How long in advance did you have to book? I called for a reservation and couldn't get one until September!

I lucked out and got a last minute invite from someone else who already had a reservation.
When the group of 6 of us left, we made a reservation for their next available table of 6 which was for late Nov.
They did tell us that if you wanted a reservation for 2 people they could get you in a lot quicker than that.

Any good mothers day suggestions out there? They always go to a boring old golf course clubhouse. I want to take them to someplace nicer for once.

Don’t know your location, but I think Bow Valley Ranche or Heartland Cafe (okotoks) are the perfect Mother’s Day restaurants. Ya, the okotoks suggestion is a little out there, but it is a great fit for the day- as is BVR.
If you aren’t that far down south, Deane House might also be a good choice for the occasion.

The Mad Rose in Royal Oak redid their patio. It now has an enclosure with sliding windows and a louvered roof with heaters so it is a 3 season patio now. Really well done.

I know my mother always appreciated getting chinese food from the Oakridge strip mall (can't remember the name).
She always treasured it like she was taking a "safari" to a exotic lands of "the orient" with ginger beef, chicken balls with yellow goo and chow mein. If she was hammered, it was salt and pepper squid as well, too spicy though most times. There is always a side order of rice to bring back sanity and the comforts of home.
So that's where I recommend Charles.
