On the radio this morning in Toronto, it certainly sounds like issues between Shanahan and Dubas might lead to Dubas leaving. The hosts talking about them not always being 100% aligned and Shanahan being a bit of a micromanager holding the right to the final decision. On the other hand, it's clear that Dubas is loved by everyone in the organization from the owners down to the players.
Really hoping the Flames come out of this with Dubas, but I still think it's more likely Dubas stays in Toronto.

I didn't like the vibe of him talking about how hard the last year was for his family. If the job is creating that much stress for his family he probably should take some time off as that job is going to get even harder and more stressful over the next two seasons.

Johnny and Matthew said the same thing, players rarely ever say the opposite as it attracts bad press. He much like Matthew has expressed wanting to play in a US market one day, this is likely his only chance at literally any team and at a crazy contract.
Chicago is getting Bedard, has a ton of space to land multiple UFAs… original 6 team, great city… could it happen?

I don't think you can discount how Leafs fans and media put their star players on pedestals. Look at Sundin for example. That could be enticing for Matthews but so could playing in the USA. I don't believe anything players say when it comes to speculation on an expiring deal as they are trained by their agents to say the right things as we saw in Calgary. At the end of the day money talks and he's going to expect the biggest payday in the history of the NHL and if the Leafs aren't willing to pay him $13+ million then he's going to go to a team that will. If I was his agent I would be asking for closer to $14-15 knowing that Draisaitl will eclipse his deal a year later.

To CGY: Nylander, Robertson
To TOR: Mangiapane, Toffoli, 2nd
This gives Calgary to get a chance to take a run with more Swedes on the roster as well as signing Nylander if it works out. Flames also get faster. If it doesn't work out they'd have a young Robertson who, who knows what he ends up being? Flames would be selling high on Toffoli who probably doesn't factor into long term plans anyway. Mangiapane is a wildcard.
Toronto would like this because Toffoli can get dirty goals on the one of the middle lines ideally, and Mangiapane provides additional scoring threats on the bottom two lines and maybe some playing time with Matthews to see if he clicks.
Personally I think it works. No team takes a huge gamble but it suits both teams' needs. On a side note, I'd stress this off-season for the new GM should be an exercise in getting rid of long term deals (Markstrom, Coleman, Kadri, Huberdeau).

That's a no go from Toronto. If they are going to sell Nylander, they are going to want to grab a 1st, a decent roster player in return, (which could be Toffoli but Toffoli and a 1st is too much), so maybe a 1st, Dube, and a nice prospect from us. Not a top 5er, but someone that could be on the Marlies and then play for the Leafs in a couple of years... If we have anyone like that. Maybe Mangiapane and a 1st would work, but I honestly don't want to move any other 1st after throwing one away to get rid of Monahan.

Good. Time for this Franchise to get more cutthroat if they want to win it all.

I would have rather they let Treliving interview if he was interested but it's within Edwards right to deny him that and there could be more to the breakup than we know.

No problem with not letting treliving talk. He likely knows who's where on our draft list for starters.

The nice guy approach has landed us here. You certainly don't seem happy with the current state of things so why keep trying the same approach?

They have also probably talked about who needs to be moved out this offseason and potential targets. I have no problem with them not letting him interview until his contract expires when he walked.

I think there should be a separate GM search thread now that it is coming down to a decision.

I'm indifferent.
There are both potential pros and cons to making him finish out his last month before interviewing elsewhere.
I don't think it helps nor hurts the Flames in any way. There is still no shortage of interest in the GM vacancy.
As long as it isn't a personal slight by ownership for choosing to walk, then whatever. If it is, then not the greatest look.

OK so be nice to a manager who chose to walk and knows who we want to trade and potential targets? I'm sure they have a list of under-utilized players they can trade for and Tre would be familiar with every one. What if Tre signs in Pittsburgh and targets the same players? Now the team just shot itself in the foot.

I think the harm to the organization's reputation and the limitations it potentially has on management candidates is a far bigger concern than the scenario you have presented.
BT is free on July 1. If the Flames think they're getting any significant strategic advantage because of this, it's minimal, and only comes off as petty.
