I think Burke is on record as not being satisfied with our NHL goaltending, so I'd say Berra and Ramo are on the clock to see how they finish the season.

If things don't change with the Flames, the common thinking has been that Gillies would sign leaving Roy on the outside but Roy is playing well so we may as well keep him to see how he progresses. At the same time Gillies game has dropped off, so he may stay in school.

Maybe some credit should be given to our Heat goalie coach.

Even With Gillies in, MacDonald is out so I don't see how it jeopardizes Roy's contract.

When we first got Roy, he looked like a throw in who would be upgraded. Roy has spent 3 years in the minors and hasn't gotten out of the ECHL on a permanent basis yet. Things have changed now, I understand and hope he gets re-signed also.

He was on par with Brossoit when we traded him, it didn't seem like he was bad, it just seemed like a preference thing between the GMs. I think his real knock is he just isn't as big as most NHL goalies are today.

Yeah, on par but Brossoit is a rookie so Roy hadn't progressed much.

I guess it's all about how you see it.

I see our goaltenders next year as:

NHL - Ramo & Berra/UFA
AHL - Ortio & Gillies/Roy
ECHL - Undrafted UFA (CHL/NCAA grad)

If Ortio continues these numbers you've gotta try him in the NHL next season. Time will tell.

No. You don't "gotta".

I think Roy is in tough to get another contract. Free agent goalies to fill your minor league team are quite easy to find.

Bottom line to me is if our scouts and goalie coaches think Roy has an NHL future or not. If they think he has no chance at the NHL then I think they sign somebody else who they think could have a chance at the NHL. And personally I don't think they believe he has NHL upside so I think you spend your resources trying to develop someone you do think has that chance.

On par in what sense?

I think Brossoit was a much, much more highly regarded prospect at the time of the trade and I think scouts see more NHL potential in Brossoit than Roy.

They're gonna draft a goalie for sure this year. Beyond that, who knows?

Ben Hanowski has been re-assigned to the Heat.

No word if he will be there in time for today's game.

why was he called up in the first place? The Heat are playing while the Flames are practicing. What was the point

My guess would be some sort of progress/status check. He's an RFA this year and the Flames need to decide if they want to qualify him or not. So call him up, see how he's doing, let him skate around in practice and join in a little Flames team building and see how he does.

Plus, at the time of the call-up, the Heat didn't have all of these injuries so it seemed like it would be okay. Then two more guys went down and we ended up short benched.

Flames need to still be able to run 4 lines in practice. With Glencross still hurt, McGrattan getting injured and Stempniak leaving the team they needed to call someone up.

HHHQ - Hanowski Returns

Yup. Looks like he was just getting some practice reps, good little article with Hartley quotes on Flames site.
