The last 3 GMs here have been basically career GMs. Changing to someone who has that player experience on top of a lot of on the job learning makes for a very interesting candidate IMO.
You're selling Conroy short if you think he's just going to just tow the line in the same method that Treliving did. He's his own person and is going to do his thing based on his experience as a player and front office member.

Treliving and Burke did play, just not at the NHL level. Treliving mostly played in the ECHL, and had a couple cups of coffee in the AHL and IHL. Burkie played NCAA at Providence for Lou Lamoriello, and played a year in the 'A' with the Maine Mariners before going back to law school.

Hmm, cool that canes are letting Tulsky talk to teams. Hopefully Calgary has him on their list.

Is it weird that I’m less worried about the GM spot than the coach?
I feel like there are plenty of qualified GMs available but the coach candidates worry me.

I don't know how reasonable this is but the Leafs have some very interesting things to think about. And some of it simply revolves around game theory, so after a few thoughts here's some pointers and a small trade proposal (all assuming Dubas is brought back).
1) Matthews has a NMC kicking in July 1st and is a UFA next year. Getting him to sign an extension will be to dollars of his liking as well as the sold direction of the team. Assumption here - he's not going to sign an extension before July 1st.
2) Tavares still has 2 years @ $11M each year. He's stuck with the Leafs no matter what. He'd just sulk if dealt and at that price no GM would take the chance, even if salary retained.
3) Marner has two years remaining at just under $11M, but puts up a ton of points and creates plays. He'd bring back a huge return, especially being young and under contract, but he's also BFFs with Matthews. You deal him, resigning Matthews becomes an upsell. Matthews also then probably doesn't take a discount. He also has a NMC July 1st so he's not going anywhere.
4) Nylander has one year left and by all accounts is friends with the above, but doesn't have quite the same ties. He has a 4 team NMC that changes to 10, on July 1. By process of elimination the Leafs have to trade him by July 1st.
Just thinking about what the Leafs/Flames swap looks like, it would make a lot of sense. Leafs need someone who can get a bit scrappy in the slot and get dirty goals. Flames need to get younger, faster and skilled. Assuming Nylander doesn't have the Flames on his list:
To CGY: Nylander, Robertson
To TOR: Mangiapane, Toffoli, 2nd
This gives Calgary to get a chance to take a run with more Swedes on the roster as well as signing Nylander if it works out. Flames also get faster. If it doesn't work out they'd have a young Robertson who, who knows what he ends up being? Flames would be selling high on Toffoli who probably doesn't factor into long term plans anyway. Mangiapane is a wildcard.
Toronto would like this because Toffoli can get dirty goals on the one of the middle lines ideally, and Mangiapane provides additional scoring threats on the bottom two lines and maybe some playing time with Matthews to see if he clicks.
Personally I think it works. No team takes a huge gamble but it suits both teams' needs. On a side note, I'd stress this off-season for the new GM should be an exercise in getting rid of long term deals (Markstrom, Coleman, Kadri, Huberdeau).

I don't think Toronto does that. As of right now Mangiapane is a one hit wonder, Toffoli is nice add but they would be concerned on his next contract and age, and the 2nd doesn't move the needle. I think unless one of Hanifin or Lindholm is in play you can't land Nylander.

They’d be stupid to not trade Matthews right now.

He's publicly said he's up for a contract extension. No way he'd be unnecessary pressure on himself if he didn't mean it. He seems like a down south kinda guy but I'm sure if the price is right he's fine with the Leafs. People are estimating $13M, which is a team killer, so there is an argument to sell just based on that. McDavid may be the only player in the league worth that much as a percentage of your overall cap.

Blame it on Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish.
Not unreasonable considering the "club" atmosphere around the league.

That really is nothing but media driven speculation IMO.
Might he leave? Of course.
However, there are 6+ weeks before July 1. The majority of that time should be spent trying to fond a deal that works for both sides.
If not, then you start talking deals with others, and have all summer to make a trade.
Zero reason to trade him "right now".

I don’t think the poster literally meant today, this minute, “right now.”

Yeah I agree.
I think a deal centered around hanfin for nylandar makes sense for both sides.
Hanifin + toffoli or mang + balancing pick? (2nd maybe?) For nylander + timmins.
Not sure if they'd prefer toffoli or mang. Toffoli is better right now and has a cup win but is obviously older with less control.
Would hate to have to do dube instead but that might be the case and I'd probably do it.

I think it's mostly Flames fans hoping Matthews leaves given he's an elite player. I think he's being honest when he said yesterday he wants to stay a Leaf.
