Found the podcast. Friedman says since the NHL year is July 1st to June 30th and his bday is on June 24th he does not qualify. He is a 2/3rd buy out.

No one is erasing the bad months. They are saying if he can eliminate those, which seems possible given he has shown he can play better, the results get better.

It's exact age...so it will be dependent on when the buyout period is over based on when the Stanley Cup finals happen

Holy hell that PLD buy out cost is ludicrous. How was that even a conversation???.

But it doesn’t really matter at this point anyway. They are rebuilding, why worry about his contract right now? Especially to get an apparent locker room issue.
|
But why replace it at all?
He’s been low 50’s for 2 seasons.
He had half a season around 60, so now he’s a 70 point guy.

You can do that and make anyone look a lot better.
Even better only got him to a 60 point pace.
And he’ll be one year older.

But you can't just ignore his worst month. Every player goes through good and bad stretches.
He is what he is. A 50 point player who is extremely disappointing for his salary, but a fine 2nd to 3rd liner.

If it is the 1/3rd version then the Kings could spend 15 million to save 31.

A cap hit of $1.3 mil until 2038, to save us $2.5 per season for a couple of rebuild years. Make it make sense.

The important savings are 7 million in the tail end of Huberdeau’s contract

We have zero idea if that’s going to even be necessary to fit under the cap. Skinner hasn’t resulted in Buffalo shipping out a ton of young talent…
His contract isn’t a death sentence. it’s a bananas idea.

No one’s ignoring it. They are being positive and saying he might be able to get rid of a month like that in the future.
He will almost certainly never be worth $10.5. That much is true.

I don't want PLD though. It is hard enough cheering for Huberdeau sometimes.
Now imagine 20x the effort and laziness issues.

The only reason to get PLD is for buyout purposes, which I think is coming for LA soon. If the ownership in Calgary would deem Huberdeau a sunk cost and simply wanted him off the team, you can bet they would trade for PLD immediately if possible because his buyout would save 40 million in real dollars for Edwards. The buyout is actually very team friendly considering the length of the contract.

I could honestly seeing LA doing it but they are in a much different spot

Huberdeau will have more points as the Flames team becomes more talented IMO. Believe it or not they had the #1 PP in the NHL for the final stretch after Kuz was inserted. That's not to say 115 but somewhere in between.
