It's basically a diversionary program. If you meet the criteria and are willing to enter AMP, your matter is adjourned for a few months while you make contact with Correctional Services to determine the scope of your program. Depending on the individual and the particular offence you might be assigned to a certain number of hours of community service, various treatment courses (e.g., anger management), and may be "required" to make a donation to a charity.
Upon successful completion of the program, your matter returns to the court and the Crown withdraws your charge. No conviction, no criminal record.
