Yep, although that last part could be a pretty big positive if you play your cards right

Year in year out I am way more interested to read through the band listing for Coachello and SXSW vs Lollapalooza. Maybe it is the underdog nature of the bands they bring in who are just emerging. Headliners can often be the most predictable/rehearsed/boring shows out there. It is about shelf life. Seems to be a yearly question that often never gets answered but truly what headliners did Coachello miss out on this year? Who are the make it or break it bands.

The rumour is that because AEG is in the process of being sold, the line-up suffered as a result. But yeah when the rumours of the Rolling Stones or Daft Punk are out there and you get Blur and Phoenix, I can see why people are pretty disappointed.

I know it's a bit of a trek from Calgary relative to Coachella, but Governors Ball is stepping into the 3 day festival game this year in a pretty big way and tickets are only $240. I'm a little concerned about some of the logistics, but the lineup looks great.

http://governorsballmusicfestival.com/tickets.html

Kanye, Kings of Leon and a TBA headliner. Nas, Pretty Lights, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Feist, Cut Copy, Death from Above 1979, Gary Clark Jr. (who is so good live), Bloc Party, ALt-J, Crystal Castles and many more.

Personally I think there are great bands playing however it's the headliners that are pretty weak. Phoenix, ya they are one of my favourites however I don't think they are headline material. I'm half expecting Daft Punk or someone amazing to show up with them.

Either way, I can't wait to go!

Hey valo, I'm curious why you complain about Coachella's headliners when Governors Ball has the exact same headliners as Chella did in 2011, and most of the same lineup from the last two years. No one really stands out on Governors lineup, there aren't any rare acts or "big gets", whereas Coachella went out and got Lou Reed, Nick Cave, New Order, Violent Femmes, J5, etc. I personally think out of all of the festivals that have released lineups so far, Coachella has the best lineup by a mile.

Huh? Where did I comment on Coachella 2011?

No, you complained about this years Coachella, I'm just saying Governors Ball is recycling Coachella's 2011 headliners this year

Well that's great, and goes to show that the acts headlining Governors are headliner worthy.

.....from 2 years ago.

KoL and Kanye have both gone downhill in the past two years in a big way, KoL especially. KoL went from being my favorite band, to a band I could care less about. Their last few albums have blown. Their live shows are totally unenergetic now. Someone needs to send them to detox and have them start writing songs in their garage again. The whole drugs and stadium shows thing has not exactly done wonders for the quality of their music.

The same could be said for Nas, Animal Collective, Erykah Badu, Thievery Coporation, etc...

That Governers headline really looks like the dream line up from 2009 or so.

Agreed on KoL, saw them multiple times in venues large and small a few years back and they were great, they've been garbage since.

I saw Nas on NYE, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

For nearly half the price I'll take Governors 10/10 times.

I also find it kind of hilarious that those acts are getting called out but acts on the Coachella lineup that have been around forever and haven't done much recently aren't getting the same treatment. It's the typical 'it's Coachella so it's amazing' act we see every year, this year doesn't really warrant it.

Well I mean if you're going there, take away Phoenix (who doesn't even exist at this time) and the Coachella lineup would be a dream lineup in 1994. 2013? Meh, especially since the RHCP are without Frusciante.

I'm still in shock that Blur and The Stone Roses are headlining a night. The main stage is going to be a ghost town Friday night. I was at Pulp last year and it was totally dead, I expect the same this year.

YYY's and Modest Mouse should be headlning over the Brits, I guarantee they will draw a larger crowd. Then everyone will go to bed or go see Bassnectar and Dog Blood in the Sahara.

The thing about many of the older bands at Coachella is that they haven't played together much lately. So it represents a unique opportunity to see old bands/lineups reformed.

On top of that, they have a bunch of current bands, that are coming out with great albums now: Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Puscifer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (will have new album out by then), Passion Pit, the XX, Metric, Divine Fits, etc...

One thing to remember about Coachella, is that the audience is slightly older than festivals like Sasquatch. There are lots of early 20s there, but also lots of people in their late 20s and 30s. The opportunity to see acts like the Stone Roses, Blur, Wu-Tang, etc.. is pretty huge.

Last year Pulp and the Dr. Dre mashup were both incredible.

Obviously everyone has their own preference for music, but I'd much rather see the Coachella acts. Some of the acts are older, but older in the sense they are some of the most talented acts of the past 10-20-30 years. As oppossed to an act like KoL, who just plain burnt out a few years ago.

I wanna go just for Paul Kalkbrenner. He rarely comes to North America.

It's a great year for djs since they seem to be moving away from your typical pop radio djs (Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, etc) to more deep/tech house acts. Booka Shade, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Luciano, Maya Jane Coles, Richie Hawtin and Seth Troxler should all be unreal.
