Tracking of social media related to the campaign.

Nenshi has most twitter followers and youtube uploads - particularly because of his latest video. Closing in fast on Ric McIver's facebook "likes" - adding about 100 people a week.

Question becomes how he can translate his significant online popularity into name recognition city-wide.

I think it's likely a case of topical conversation the brings up his name. Every gathering I've attended in the past couple of weeks, the civic election has come up and I've brought up his name, discussed what I know of him and other candidates.

Nenshi really seems to be trying to engage the social media, to make some people care about civic politics, and that can only spread.

I'm not sure what to make of the social media honestly. I follow a number of the candidates and am facebook friends as well. I just have no idea on how these things translate into votes?

On a sort of related note some of the tweets that McIver makes are unintentionally hilarious. Seriously someone more in the loop ought to take access to his account for him!

My feeling is not all that well. It's easy to "Like" something on Facebook, or "Friend" a candidate that you agree with. Getting out and voting on election day is a whole other matter. Unless you're really reaching a demographic that for other reasons is already very motivated, I'm very skeptical of social networking as a campaign tool.

Exactly. I'm going to vote Nenshi, but he's the Ron Paul of this mayoral race.

Another candidate joins the fray - but I can't see him being a factor: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/De...732/story.html

I should've posted this sooner, but Kent Hehr is holding a BBQ/concert today at his campaign office. There will be a band playing on the roof (ala U2) and the campaign office is at 2405 Macleod Trail SW. (The formerly white building across from the Erlton C-Train station).

I expect that this will be a huge event! Free BBQ and a chance to talk to Kent and grill him yourself about issues of importance.

Are other mayoral candidates using Professor Frink's Auto Dialer 5000? RoboHawkesworth called my office again yesterday. Do those kinds of calls ever sway a voter to vote for the caller? If anything, he's annoyed me enough I can't see myself voting for him regardless of where he stands on the issues. I would be more receptive to an actual person calling or even one of his foot soldiers banging on my door.

Its a pretty common tactic and cost effective. While everyone would like someone to come to their door its harder to do and in the summer not really worthwhile for the most part.

If your goal is to contact as many people as possible, I guess you can achieve your goal with demon dialing. If your goal is to make meaningful contact with people, it's a total fail.

I may be out of line, but I don't think people today really enjoy being solicited for things on the phone. Whether it's someone asking for a vote, giving you free travel dollars or trying to sell you a subscription to the Calgary Sun, it's kind of annoying. Often times the calls come at home during supper or in the evening when you have a million better things to do. I get a plethora of calls at the office from automated recordings and it's highly disruptive.

Just like some are wondering about how effective it is to run a strong social networking campaign, I think it's equally valid to be asking whether cold calling a million plus people with an automated message from a canddiate is effective any more.

^I'm not disagreeing with you at all here, just saying why it's done and why more calls are likely to come.

Confession: I voted for a candidate almost entirely because he kept on with the demon dialed and no one else seemed to do much of anything.

So how many people have put their money where their mouth is and donated or volunteered for their favourite candidate?

Does it count that I've seemingly convinced several of my friends to vote for someone?

I donated money to Nenshi even before he made his candidacy official. My own over arching political views (big picture, nothing really to do with mayoral races) wouldnt jive with the Nenshi crowd as I have observed them at several events.

I am more than happy to donate my money and my vote.

Excellent question.

I know of one CP'er who helped me out.

As for the dialers I think they do serve a purpose in getting your name out there. When it's a large field as with the mayors race or here in Ward 4 (8 candidates with rumors of 3 more to come) everyone starts to blur. Reaching out via phone messaging is just one way to do that.
