I haven't read all the replies and maybe neither has the original poster..but my 2 cents...
I think you did the right thing. I too subscribe to the old school rule of letting people older than yourself and ladies have your seat....or at least offering it up.
How could you be certain that she could stand for that amount of time? Maybe she has some underlying condition that makes her appear capable but really isn't.
I think most of us get our backs up when asked to do something or give up something by a stranger..but I like to think if they didn't need it they wouldn't ask..
What about in another 26 short years those roles are reversed and you'd like to rest your weary old bones and chivalry is dead..you'll just have to stand old man..

I'm sure Christopher Columbus was told the same thing when he said that...gasp...the world is round, not flat.
Any nice guy here who has gone to a bar, saw a woman that he liked, bought her a drink, listened to her talk about how men are such a**holes...and then, at the end of the night, watches that girl go home with said a**hole and screw him...knows I speak the truth.
Just like in the Matrix you've invested so much of yourself in the lie...you'll do anything to protect it.
I understand and you have my pity.

I hope amorak and -TC- aren't sitting on computer chairs while typing in this thread. There are most definately ladies on the street that should be sitting in that seat, not them.

If anyone asks, I won't hesitate to do it. It's not worth the stress or causing a scene on the way to work. Is it that big a deal either way? If it happens consistently with the same person who seems physically able, then I would ask what is wrong.
Regarding girls, etc. I know a few people who would take offense to being offered seats but if they ask, I'd do it and always would for friends or family.
And seriously, come on CP. We really have it bad don't we? The biggest issue we have to suffer is getting to sit on the train or not? Think of the children in Africa! Africa!
