I get that they've got a lot to cram into 10 episodes... but one minute they're regular civilians and the next they're on a boat about to invade a country. Band of Brothers, for example, dedicated an entire episode to training and character development. You got a feeling for who the guys where and what they were doing. We just got a pep talk from some old dude yelling about stuff and they were off.

Old dude....he's probably in his forties...jeez...
This series covers four years of war and features three main characters who fight in different units. One of them (Basilone) is already a marine prior to the war. Another (Leckie) enlists immediately after Pearl and he is prominently featured in the first battle. The third character is not even in the marines yet and is apparently 4F with a heart murmur. Its pretty obvious that this series will have a much different format, as opposed to Band of brothers where all of the characters are in the same unit and do all of their combat within a one year period. Plus you have seen one episode and don't have the benefit of repeated watchings. I get a sense that this ones gonna get nasty. With all true stories about war, you'll get more out of it by checking a little background history, which is readily available. Just my opinion.
awesome movie, it's very nostalgic for me. It was quite well done for it's time.
I have seen Midway many times and the true story of that battle is positively amazing. That said, the movie is dissapointing because of all the stock footage used, featuring US aircraft not in use at the time of the battle. The side story with Chuck Heston, his son and the Japanese American chick was totally unnecessary. Midway could effectively be remade today more realistically by using less movie stars and modern CGI which could more accurately depict the hardware. It was the true turning point in the Pacific War, and a victory for the US on the level of Trafalgar. It deserves a first rate remake. Just don't let Michael Bay anywhere near it.

I still remember seeing the trailer for Pearl Harbour in the theatres and thinking it was gonna be all sorts of awesome, and then we get the love triangle and Ben Affleck and terrible historical accuracy...it could have been great.

In my opinion, the lack of development with the characters did nothing for me in making a connection when they suddenly appeared in battle. I found myself wondering which one was which. It's the first episode, granted, but regardless, thats the way I felt. I'm sure that'll change by next episode. It's going to be wicked.

But it wasn't.
Tora Tora Tora is still the measure when it comes to movies like this.
In terms of T.V. series, I loved band of brothers, I'm sure that I will really love the pacific.
but my favorite war based T.V. series was Tour of Duty.

I first started watching Band of Brothers 2 episodes in. The character development greatly improved when I finally saw the first episode, but I still needed repeated watchings before all these dirt covered guys in helmets were fully fleshed out. Like I said, it would be tough to put an episode like "Curahee" into the Pacific, given the varied situations of the characters. Glad I have my PVR, as I intend to watch episode one again just prior to episode two.

Think of the rest of them like red shirts on star trek. They appear, they leave, more appear, more leave. I can think of about 20, if it wasnt for the points episode I woudnt have remembered 1/2 that many though.

WWII is so overdone. I cannot bring myself to watch this show.
Can we have some other conflicts please? I guess the big budgets always goto the ones where America is the most involved (WWII, Vietnam)
I'd like an HBO miniseries on the 20 Years War, the War of 1812, Both Boer Wars, Falklands War, WWI, Korean War, etc.
i think it's because WWII was and is such a good narrative. what other war can you think of where it was truly good vs. evil? you don't get much more evil than Hitler and Nazi death camps. it was a war that needed to be fought, unlike many other famous conflicts. for example i have a hard time getting into any Vietnam movie since it was such a pointless war

I didn't realize until watching it for the 6th time or so that Lt. Meehan was the guy from Life on Mars. (Such an awesome show)
In regards to WW2 being over done..
Over 70,000,000 people died during that global conflict. The world has never seen such wanton destruction of life and country than in that conflict. Shall the horrors of it be revisited time and again for all to understand and fear.

Midway was Japan's big dice role, they had victory fever because they had been kicking a$$ across the Pacific. Yamamoto knew that he wasn't going to win the war if it dragged on, he was hoping to deal a fatal blow to the American Navy and force them to negotiate a treaty.
They were also expecting to face Halsey and not Nimitz, and Nimitz approach was far more deliberate then Halsey who was a hard charger.
The arrogance on the Japanese Navy was shown early and often. They did very light scouting, they had poor intelligence as they expected the American Carriers to still be in Pearl Harbour. Because of this they left their carriers relatively exposed and bunched up.
The over aggressiveness of the Japanese Pilots where they all dropped low to go after the slow planes of Torpedo Squadron 8 left the formation wide open for dive bomber attacks.
The American's scouted better, had better luck, and knew the Japanese were coming due to the Water Purifier trick. There was no way that the Japanese were going to win the battle. When things started going wrong they should have retired from the Battlefield instead of trying to pursue another strike against American Carriers which left them very vunerable as they kept changing the loadouts on their planes.
The US ships also had radar. The Japanese did not.

I think it's also because, in most wars it really depends on where you live for who you'd consider the "good guys" and "bad guys". But WWII is probably the only major war where the Axis were pretty much universally considered evil and had to be stopped. Of course this was furthered even more after the war when the general population found out about the Jewish concentration camps.
Also I think it gets especially overdone a bit in the States because if you look at their history, WWII is basically what shaped them into the country they are today in terms of their foreign policy. Before WWII, the States was basically a self-imposed isolationist country who wanted nothing to do with European wars and squabbling, they just wanted to focus on their side of the world. But after the war, they started seeing themselves as the great protectors, hence why now they kind of have a reputation for sticking their nose in places it may not belong.
